About The Position
The Automation Engineering Intern is responsible for hands-on development, integration, and testing of automation and control solutions for fluid handling systems in a lab-based, agile environment. This role will rapidly iterate with a cross‑functional engineering team, building, wiring, troubleshooting electro‑mechanical systems, and supporting control loop implementation and documentation. This position is part of the R&D Organization located in Marlborough, MA and will be an on-site role.
Requirements
- Pursuing a degree in Automation, Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related field
- Strong fundamentals in electro‑mechanical and fluid systems, including pumps, valves, sensors, and actuators
- Basic understanding of feedback control systems and PID control concepts
- Comfortable working hands‑on in a lab‑centric, experimental environment
- Able to learn quickly and contribute effectively in small, collaborative, sprint‑driven teams
Nice To Haves
- Exposure to industrial automation platforms (e.g., Emerson DeltaV, Siemens) and core DCS/PLC concepts including control modules, function blocks, alarms, and batch or state‑based control
- Understanding of instrumentation signals (4–20 mA, digital I/O), industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, PROFIBUS), and basic diagnostics/troubleshooting
- Experience with lab testing, data logging, control system commissioning, or relevant biology/bioprocessing concepts
Responsibilities
- Develop, integrate, and test automation and control systems in a hands‑on lab environment
- Build, wire, and troubleshoot electro‑mechanical systems including pumps, valves, actuators, and instrumentation
- Assist with control loop implementation and tuning for flow, pressure, and level applications
- Support sprint‑based, agile development with rapid iteration and clear technical documentation
- Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, automation, and application engineering teams
