About The Position

South Bow's Automation Engineering team is responsible for the control systems that support safe, reliable, and efficient pipeline operations across Canada and the U.S. These systems include PLCs, RTUs, HMIs, field instrumentation, communications infrastructure, and integrations with SCADA and leak detection systems. This is a technical role for an experienced Automation Engineer who wants to influence how critical pipeline control systems are designed, sustained, secured, and modernized. You will lead complex automation work across South Bow’s liquids pipeline network, solve high-impact control system challenges, and help shape standards, practices, and technical decisions that support safe and reliable operations across Canada and the U.S.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, preferably Electrical, Computer, Automation, Instrumentation, Controls, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer designation with APEGA.
  • Typically 8+ years of relevant automation, control systems, industrial operations, or pipeline experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex automation or control system work in operational environments.
  • Deep technical expertise in PLCs, RTUs, HMIs, field instrumentation, SCADA integration, industrial communications, and control system lifecycle practices.
  • Proven ability to resolve complex, non-standard, or ambiguous control system issues with limited guidance.
  • Experience providing technical oversight, peer review, mentoring, and quality assurance for engineering deliverables.
  • Strong judgment, communication, and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to adapt technical communication for operations, engineering, cybersecurity, vendors, and leadership.
  • Strong technical writing, documentation, analytical, troubleshooting, and design review capability.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting liquids pipeline, terminal, pump station, or other critical industrial infrastructure.
  • Experience with Siemens S7, Emerson/ControlWave, GE, or equivalent industrial control platforms.
  • Working knowledge of Wonderware/AVEVA, SCADA systems, HMI standards, and industrial networking.
  • Experience supporting leak detection, measurement, or real-time operations systems.
  • Knowledge of industrial cybersecurity principles, OT network architectures, and secure control system change practices.
  • Experience leading automation scopes on capital, maintenance, reliability, or modernization projects.
  • Experience working with field operations, maintenance, control room, and project delivery teams.
  • Experience using data analytics, dashboards, Power BI, or automation monitoring and reporting tools.

Responsibilities

  • Lead complex automation and control system work supporting pipeline operations, leak detection, measurement, and facility control.
  • Design, integrate, troubleshoot, and sustain PLC, RTU, HMI, instrumentation, communications, SCADA, and related field systems.
  • Resolve complex, non-standard, or ambiguous control system issues where guidance may be limited and operational impact may be significant.
  • Provide technical direction for automation design, integration, testing, commissioning, lifecycle planning, and reliability improvements.
  • Lead automation scopes for capital, maintenance, modernization, and reliability initiatives from scope definition through operational handover.
  • Strengthen automation standards, control narratives, testing practices, documentation expectations, and governance processes.
  • Govern changes through Management of Change, ensuring solutions are reviewed, tested, documented, cyber-aware, and production ready.
  • Provide technical oversight of consultants, vendors, and contractors by reviewing designs, validating solutions, and challenging assumptions.
  • Collaborate across Systems Operations, Control Centre, SCADA, Cybersecurity, Telecommunications, Project Delivery, and Engineering to deliver reliable operational solutions.
  • Provide escalation-level support for significant system issues that may be outside normal working hours.
