Automation and AI Enablement Engineer

FiberFirst•Southlake, TX
•Onsite

About The Position

The Automation and AI Enablement Engineer owns and improves production automations for ticket intake and response, network self-service, and conversational workflows. This hands-on engineering role builds new automations, integrations, and AI-assisted workflows when they provide measurable value. The engineer writes production code, connects systems with limited or inconsistent documentation, and instruments workflows so that performance and reliability are measurable. The role includes taking responsibility for existing production systems, documenting and monitoring them, improving reliability and recovery, and ensuring they can be supported by others. It also involves building integrations across enterprise platforms, extending voice and digital conversational automation, and using spatial and operational data to support automated decisions. The engineer partners with Customer Experience, Network Operations, and Engineering to identify and quantify automation opportunities, and applies sound judgment about when automation or AI is appropriate. The position is based on-site at the office in Southlake, Texas. It is a regular, full-time, exempt role. The work environment is primarily office-based, with prolonged computer use and concentration, and travel of approximately 20% of the time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • Three or more years writing and maintaining production code, with automation, integration, or data engineering as a primary focus.
  • Two or more years of AI enablement experience.
  • Demonstrated experience owning a production system, including responsibility for its failures.
  • Hands-on experience building with large language models or applied machine learning in a production or near-production setting, including evaluating outputs.
  • Experience integrating third-party or vendor platforms via API.
  • Strong proficiency in Python, including scheduled and long-running processes, error handling, and logging.
  • Strong SQL skills and comfort working directly in a relational database.
  • Practical command of REST APIs, authentication patterns, webhooks, and event-driven integration.
  • Experience with large language model tooling, including prompting, retrieval-augmented generation, structured output, and evaluation.
  • Ability to define and measure whether automated or AI-driven workflows are working and detect confidently incorrect results.
  • Experience with Git and disciplined change practices, including review, testing, and deployment.
  • Operational understanding of monitoring, alerting, idempotency, and safe recovery from failure.
  • Clear written communication and ability to explain technical tradeoffs to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Sound judgment about scope and whether working systems need to be rebuilt.
  • Working knowledge of data platform administration, including access grants and catalog governance, compute sizing and cost control, and job orchestration.
  • Ability to work independently across multiple systems and priorities without close supervision.
  • Ability to travel approximately 20% of the time.
  • Ability to sit and keyboard continuously; stand and walk occasionally; and lift and carry up to 10 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with telecom, field service, CRM, or contact center platforms.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL and spatial data (PostGIS).

Responsibilities

  • Build, operate, and improve production automations for high-volume workflows, including intake, business rules, system-of-record updates, and outbound responses.
  • Take ownership of existing production automation and bring systems to a documented, monitored, and independently supportable standard.
  • Design and build integrations across enterprise systems using REST APIs, webhooks, and direct database access.
  • Build AI-assisted workflows, including retrieval, classification, summarization, and conversational automation, and define how each will be evaluated before production.
  • Instrument shipped systems by defining and measuring success and failure and making results visible.
  • Extend and maintain conversational automation across voice and digital channels, expanding the customer issues resolved without an agent.
  • Add reliability, alerting, and recovery mechanisms so that failures are detected and surfaced.
  • Work with spatial and operational data in PostgreSQL/PostGIS and the enterprise analytics platform to support automated decisions.
  • Write and maintain documentation, runbooks, and tests so processes do not depend on one person's knowledge.
  • Administer the Databricks platform alongside its current owner, including workspace and compute configuration, Unity Catalog governance and access grants, job scheduling, and cost monitoring.
  • Partner with Customer Experience, Network Operations, and Engineering to identify high-volume manual work, quantify opportunities, and deliver automation.
  • Use sound judgment about where automation and AI are appropriate, and communicate when a proposed solution is not worth building.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
