Automation Analyst

Ally LogisticsGrand Rapids, MI
Onsite

About The Position

This role is for an analyst who will not only identify automation opportunities but also build the automations themselves, leveraging AI coding tools. The company has invested in automated process discovery tooling and has a portfolio of existing RPA automations. The analyst will work with users to understand processes, identify exceptions, and then build, deploy, and manage automations using various technologies including workflow orchestration, RPA, scripts, integrations, and AI-assisted steps. The role also involves managing the existing RPA portfolio, fixing brittle automations, documenting them, and retiring those that are no longer beneficial. The analyst will be responsible for the reliability of their shipped automations through monitoring and error handling, and for managing the change process with affected teams. Success will be measured by comparing shipped automation performance against promised outcomes.

Requirements

  • Build, not just document. Point to automations, tools, scripts, or workflows that exist and are used.
  • Serious hands-on AI tooling experience. Regularly work in tools like Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex to write and debug real working code.
  • Ability to decompose a problem for a model, know when to trust the output, and where it will confidently hand you garbage.
  • Real analyst chops: ability to run a discovery session, elicit requirements from someone who has never written one, and turn a vague complaint into a defined problem with a number attached.
  • Ask the follow-up question.
  • Technical fluency: REST APIs, JSON, webhooks, SQL, and scripting in Python or JavaScript.
  • Ability to read an API doc, authenticate against it, and get data moving without help.
  • Automate your own work: built scripts, macros, or workflows that saved time.
  • Genuine curiosity about how work gets done.
  • Willingness to maintain, not just build. A meaningful share of year one is understanding and improving someone else's work.
  • Systems thinking about people: ability to talk to stakeholders, understand their concerns, and get buy-in before changing their job.
  • Know the difference between a process that should be automated and one that should be eliminated or renegotiated first.

Nice To Haves

  • Business process modeling — BPMN or equivalent, at a level of detail people actually read.
  • Hands-on with workflow automation or iPaaS platforms.
  • RPA experience, especially inheriting or auditing an existing bot portfolio.
  • n8n experience.
  • Built something real with LLM APIs: structured extraction, document processing, tool-using agents, evaluation harnesses.
  • Familiarity with task or process mining tools and translating their output into action.
  • Formal continuous improvement background: Lean, Six Sigma, value stream mapping.
  • Browser and UI automation: Playwright, Puppeteer, Selenium.
  • Data work beyond SQL: dbt, warehouse modeling, BI tooling.

Responsibilities

  • Interview and observe the humans doing the work.
  • Run discovery sessions, workshops, and side-by-side walkthroughs.
  • Dig past the first answer and surface the exceptions, workarounds, and edge cases that tooling alone won't reveal.
  • Build the automations, including workflow orchestration, RPA, scripts, integrations, and AI-assisted steps.
  • Turn process discovery output into a prioritized, quantified backlog.
  • Help own and manage the existing RPA portfolio: understand what each automation does, fix brittle automations, document undocumented ones, and retire those that no longer earn their keep.
  • Write requirements, including user stories, acceptance criteria, exception paths, and failure modes.
  • Own reliability for shipped automations: monitoring, error handling, and runbooks.
  • Manage the change process: bring affected teams along, train them, and ensure new processes are adopted.
  • Measure shipped automation performance against promised outcomes and report honestly.
