About The Position

Join the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) and contribute to shaping Seattle’s streets by leading and developing the Automated Traffic Safety Camera (ATSC) program. This role involves working closely with leadership, vendors, and interdepartmental partners to expand the ATSC program and deliver Vision Zero traffic safety projects. The position requires preparing analyses, scopes, schedules, budgets, and preliminary designs for new ATSCs and other traffic safety improvements, prioritizing projects to address holistic transportation needs in alignment with Citywide and Departmental objectives, modal plans, public input, and Seattle’s Transportation Equity Framework to achieve Vision Zero goals. This position reports to the Vision Zero Engineering Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Five (5) or more years professional civil engineering experience
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology; OR: A combinations of education and/or training and/or experience, which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class)
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington.
  • Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
  • Traffic Engineering knowledge and experience.
  • Ability to conduct traffic engineering reviews and provide guidance.
  • Knowledge and experience with AutoCAD or other CAD software, including AutoTurn.
  • Knowledge and experience with traffic modeling software, such as Synchro/SimTraffic, VISSIM, SIDRA.
  • Knowledge and experience with ArcGIS.
  • Excellent record keeping skills.
  • Effective customer service experience; demonstrated reliability.
  • Flexible and ability to prioritize needs in an environment with rapidly changing work conditions and priorities.
  • Experience working for a governmental organization.
  • Ability to effectively work in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse customer base.

Responsibilities

  • Manages ATSC expansion and other traffic safety projects, overseeing project delivery, coordinating across divisions and departments, and leading engagement with internal staff, external stakeholders, and leadership on high-visibility and sensitive initiatives.
  • Leads and performs advanced civil engineering analysis and design development for ATSC installations and complex Vision Zero infrastructure projects, serving as senior technical authority responsible for engineering accuracy, assumptions, criteria, and recommendations.
  • Develops and/or oversees the development of engineering plans, budgets, scopes, schedules, and technical documentation for ATSC projects and priority safety improvements, including high-crash locations and systemic safety treatments using Safe System principles.
  • Directs and reviews technical studies, alternatives analyses, engineering reports, and program documents.
  • Conducts and oversees complex crash and traffic safety analyses to inform projects, policies and plans, identify engineering solutions, and develop systemic countermeasures.
  • Monitors the work of consultants, city crews, and construction contractors to ensure compliance with contract provisions and scope of work.
  • Prepares and presents engineering recommendations, technical briefings, and decision documents to leadership, meeting annual program reporting requirements and ensuring alignment with budgets, policy, regulatory expectations, and departmental goals.
  • Provides senior-level guidance to advance cutting edge Safe System–based traffic operations and safety policies and standards to build on national standards and best-practices such as NACTO, AASHTO, and the MUTCD.
  • Supports citywide, department-wide, and division-wide initiatives to address transportation safety and planning, racial and social equity, and environmental and regional issues; apply engineering judgment and data-driven analysis to advance equitable transportation outcomes.
