About The Position

ICF is seeking an Automated Test Engineer, Manager to support a Federal Government agency client and help deliver reliable cloud applications, data services, and AI-enabled capabilities across an enterprise data lakehouse platform. The role manages and mentors the Automated Test Team, provides strategic direction, and builds and maintains automated tests integrated into CI/CD pipelines to provide evidence that releases meet acceptance criteria. The position works with developers, business analysts, data engineers, security specialists, product owners, and users to mature the Playwright testing suite and expand testing across application workflows and supporting data services. This role extends and maintains a Playwright/Cucumber framework using the Page Object Model; develops reusable functional, integration, regression, performance, and data-validation tests; and supports automated security checks, AI-assisted testing or code review, accessibility verification, and user acceptance testing. It translates user stories and acceptance criteria into traceable test scenarios, manages controlled test data and repeatable environments, diagnoses failures, documents defects, verifies fixes, and reports coverage, execution results, trends, and release risks. The role also contributes to Agile activities and maintains version-controlled test documentation as the platform evolves. The position is remote within the United States and requires support of Eastern Time hours. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, reside and be authorized to work in the U.S., and have lived in the U.S. for three full years out of the last five years. The selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a federal public trust or equivalent client-required background investigation. The position is not eligible for new H-1B visa sponsorship. The full-time pay range is $108,476 to $184,409.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience building and maintaining automated test suites, preferably with Playwright and TypeScript, including reusable test components using the Page Object Model, selector strategy for dynamic UIs, and failure diagnosis.
  • At least 5 years of demonstrated experience writing, debugging, and reviewing test automation code in TypeScript or JavaScript.
  • Experience writing Gherkin feature files and reusable step definitions with Cucumber or a comparable BDD framework.
  • Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and managing test code through version control and peer review.
  • Experience deriving functional, integration, and regression tests from requirements and acceptance criteria, documenting defects, and verifying fixes within an Agile delivery team.
  • Experience validating data-driven application behavior and using test evidence to identify quality issues and assess release readiness.
  • U.S. citizenship is required due to federal contract requirements.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a federal public trust or equivalent client-required background investigation.
  • Must reside in the U.S., be authorized to work in the U.S., and perform all work in the U.S.
  • Must have lived in the U.S. for three full years out of the last five years.
  • Communicate defects, test results, and release risks clearly to technical teams and business stakeholders.
  • Organize testing across concurrent workstreams and proactively identify dependencies and blockers.
  • Apply sound judgment to prioritize automation and investigate underlying causes of test failures.
  • Collaborate across disciplines and take ownership of assigned testing activities through resolution.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 2 years of experience acting as a Test Team Lead.
  • Experience establishing test architecture for a new or modernized application.
  • Experience testing Azure applications or data workflows involving Databricks; familiarity with Python or SQL for data validation.
  • Experience with Jira, Confluence, and the Scaled Agile Framework.
  • Familiarity with Section 508 and WCAG accessibility testing, including the complementary roles of automated checks and manual evaluation.
  • Experience validating AI-enabled search, document processing, or natural language workflows against defined evaluation criteria.
  • Experience supporting federal modernization programs and producing test evidence for governance, acceptance, or compliance reviews.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and mentor the Automated Test Team, strengthen team coverage, and provide strategic direction and preparation to identify risks, gaps, and dependencies early.
  • Extend and maintain the existing Playwright/Cucumber framework using the Page Object Model, and recommend improvements as the platform evolves.
  • Design, develop, and maintain reusable automated functional, integration, and regression tests for application workflows and supporting services, including APIs where applicable.
  • Design a strategy for switching roles in pipelined automated test jobs and guide application and operations teams in supporting those patterns.
  • Integrate automated suites into CI/CD pipelines, publish actionable results, and troubleshoot unreliable tests to support repeatable execution and release quality gates.
  • Plan and collaborate on implementation of AI-assisted testing and/or code review.
  • Translate user stories and acceptance criteria into traceable test scenarios, including negative cases, role-based access, and dependencies across workstreams; prioritize automation by risk and business impact.
  • Partner with data engineers to automate validation of ingestion, transformations, and migration results, checking data completeness, accuracy, and consistency across source and target systems.
  • Implement performance tests and collaborate with security specialists to integrate automated security checks, investigate findings, and verify fixes before release.
  • Maintain controlled test data and repeatable test setup; diagnose failures, document reproducible defects, and work with developers to resolve issues and verify corrections.
  • Support user acceptance testing and accessibility verification by preparing regression evidence and coordinating automated checks with required manual validation.
  • Report test coverage, execution results, defects, and release risks against agreed quality criteria; collaborate with developers on critical-service unit coverage and documented exceptions.
  • Track defect rates and trends to ensure changes to the testing posture result in measurable improvements.
  • Plan and execute testing across development, test, staging, and production-like environments, validating environment readiness, configuration consistency, integrations, and successful promotion through release gates.
  • Guide strategy for ensuring adequate fixture data and resources in lower environments.
  • Participate in functional testing with business analysts, product owners, and users to validate end-to-end workflows, confirm expected outcomes, document defects, and verify resolutions.
  • Participate in Agile planning, reviews, and retrospectives; maintain version-controlled test documentation and improve the automation approach as the platform evolves.
