About The Position

The Kahnawà:ke Education Center (KEC) is seeking an Autism Consultant to support students with neurodiverse needs within their inclusive educational programs. This role involves facilitating the organization of services, detecting, evaluating, and providing support to students with Autism and other neurodiverse needs. The consultant will provide consultation, coaching, and systems-level support to promote effective, evidence-based practices that improve student outcomes. Collaboration with IEP teams, educators, administrators, related service providers, and families is key to building staff capacity, strengthening programming, and supporting inclusive practices. The Autism Consultant will also work with professionals in other departments to ensure student success across all subject areas and promote an inclusive approach throughout KEC by improving staff understanding and skills through meetings, workshops, professional development, and documentation for staff, parents, and students.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Inclusive/Special Education with 5 years of extensive experience working with students with autism OR a Bachelor’s Degree in Education with 8 years of extensive experience working with students with autism in an inclusive setting.
  • Strong knowledge of the Kahnawà:ke Education System and/or experience in working with First Nations educational systems, in particular with the services that support students with diverse or special needs and their families.
  • Complete proficiency in English language.
  • Expertise in the use and interpretation of assessment tools used to evaluate students with autism and other neurodiverse needs.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure a nursery/kindergarten screening process is in place to detect difficulties and need for further Autism assessment.
  • Consult with teachers to discuss cases and possible solutions for classroom interventions and adaptations for students with autism.
  • Provide classroom assistance to support the integration of new nursery/kindergarten students and students transitioning to the next grade.
  • Conduct classroom observations to collect data and develop intervention plans.
  • Ensure students receive pedagogical services that are inclusive and best address the needs of students with autism or other neurodiverse needs.
  • Participate in the creation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and transition plans for students with autism, ensuring appropriate supports, interventions, accommodations, or modifications.
  • Collaborate with other professionals (e.g., psychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists) to ensure students with autism receive necessary services.
  • Liaise with outside agencies and organizations to coordinate services and seek support for students with autism and their families.
  • Identify the need for, develop, and provide workshops and professional development opportunities to teachers and support staff to enhance their expertise in working with students with autism and other neurodiverse needs.
  • Identify the need for, develop, and provide workshops for the student body to foster an understanding of autism and promote an inclusive environment.
  • Provide workshops for parents on autism to foster understanding and empower them to advocate for their child(ren).
  • Provide support to families in accessing services outside of the school.
  • Provide support to the Associate Principals of each school in organizing services for students with autism.
  • Actively participate in a collaborative team to facilitate transitions of students with autism from the Step By Step Child and Family Center to nursery and kindergarten, and from elementary to secondary school.
  • Assist teams in evaluating and implementing assistive technology to support communication, access, and independence.
  • Provide guidance on tools and resources that enhance student outcomes.
  • Work in conjunction with the Coordinator of Student Services & Family Engagement and Special Education Consultants to ensure alignment of services and supports.
  • Support, monitor, and report to the SSFEC on the special education coding process applicable to special needs within the system for FNEC and AANDC funding purposes.
