About The Position

The Department of Motor Vehicles - Motor Carrier Services is seeking an Auditor to join their team. This role involves administering the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) and International Registration Plan (IRP) for interstate trucking companies registered in Nebraska. This position will be filled at the Auditor level with potential for advancement to Senior Auditor.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration or accounting.
  • At least 24 semester hours of accounting or auditing.
  • Confidentiality statement required.
  • Must be able to present a valid driver’s license or another form of reliable transportation.
  • Regular and reliable attendance required.
  • Knowledge of financial and statistical audit principles, standards, procedures, theories, and accounting principles, standards, and methods.
  • Knowledge of general mathematical calculations such as multiplication and division computations, fractions, discounts, interest rates, ratios, and proportions.
  • Knowledge of a variety of advisory data and information such as financial records, computer software operating manuals, rules, regulations, statutes, guidelines and correspondence.
  • Ability to communicate in person, by telephone, and in writing with coworkers, supervisor, client representatives, and carriers.
  • Ability to be assertive to gather information, explain audit procedures, or testify in hearings and court.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, carriers and their representatives, and others involved in the audit process.
  • Ability to interpret and apply financial/accounting principles and instructions to analytical situations.
  • Ability to exercise limited independent judgment and decisiveness in a variety of settings.
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize assignments with competing deadlines.
  • Ability to work with computer spreadsheet and data management applications.
  • Ability to navigate computer, on-line, and web-based accounting systems.
  • Ability to perform data analysis to audit, deduce, assess, and conclude.
  • Ability to use discretion in selecting and applying established criteria.
  • Ability to provide guidance and interpretation to others, including the public and co-workers, regarding rule application, policies, procedures and standards to specific situations.

Responsibilities

  • Administering the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) and International Registration Plan (IRP) for interstate trucking companies registered in Nebraska.
  • Performing audits to ensure trucking companies comply with fuel tax and registration regulations and Nebraska statutes.
  • Analyzing mileage documentation and fuel transactions.
  • Serving as an auditor in-charge and directing members of the audit team.
  • Acquiring knowledge of departmental policies, tax laws, regulations, accounting systems, and audit requirements of two international agreements.
  • Conducting special projects or other assigned work.
  • Performing in-the-field and in-office audits of mileage and fuel information.
  • Determining the correct fuel tax and registration fees of carriers in the transportation industry.
  • Preparing/completing audit files containing various audit reports and work papers supporting the results of the audit.
  • Working with in-house developed computerized accounting software.
  • Providing testimony in legal hearings.
  • Other duties as assigned and within the scope of the classification.
