About The Position

The Audit Liaison serves as a central coordinator for the University of Virginia’s annual external audit process which includes three state agencies (University of Virginia, Medical Center, and College at Wise). This role is responsible for managing audit timelines, coordinating deliverables and facilitating communication between auditors and University Stakeholders to ensure smooth, efficient audit process. The Audit Liaison works in close partnership with Financial Reporting, the Controller’s Office, General Accounting and functional units across the University to ensure audit requests are fulfilled accurately and on time. This position plays a critical role in aligning stakeholders, tracking progress, and ensuring audit readiness across the enterprise. The position reports to the Assistant Vice President for Finance and University Controller and requires strong project management, collaboration, and communication skills to support a complex, multi-entity audit environment.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
Four (4) years of progressive experience in accounting, finance, audit, or related fields.
Experience supporting or participating in external audits or large-scale financial processes.
Strong project management, communication, and coordination skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively across multiple stakeholders and organizational levels.
Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
Proven ability to work effectively with senior leadership and external partners.
Bachelor's degree. 4 years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Four years of relevant experience.

Nice To Haves

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license
Understanding of GAAP and/or GASB frameworks (from a coordination and audit support perspective).
Experience in a complex, multi-entity environment (e.g., higher education, academic health systems, or government).
Familiarity with audits conducted by the Commonwealth of Virginia Auditor of Public Accounts (APA).
Experience working with ERP systems such as Workday.

Responsibilities

Plan and coordinate the annual external audit process, including timelines, tracking deliverables, and facilitating communication between auditors and University stakeholders.
Serve as the primary liaison for audit logistics with the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Auditor of Public Accounts (APA).
Manage Prepared-by-Client (PBC) request tracking, ensuring timely and complete responses across all participating units.
Monitor audit progress, identify risks to timelines, and escalate issues as appropriate to leadership.
Support audit planning activities, including scheduling, document coordination, and stakeholder alignment.
Partner with Financial Reporting, Health System Finance, College at Wise, and other key functional areas to coordinate audit-related activities.
Facilitate consistent and coordinated responses to auditor inquiries across multiple entities and teams.
Serve as a central point of coordination across Finance, Information Technology, Human Resources, Sponsored Programs, and other operational areas supporting the audit.
Support leadership communication by preparing status updates, summaries, and briefing materials related to audit progress.
Coordinate the tracking and reporting of audit findings, management points, and remediation activities.
Partner with Financial Compliance, and functional units to monitor progress against remediation plans.
Support the preparation and coordination of management responses to audit findings.
Maintain documentation of audit outcomes and track recurring themes to inform continuous improvement efforts.
Identify opportunities to improve audit coordination processes, documentation standards, and response workflows.
Support the development of standardized tools, templates, and practices to enhance audit efficiency and reduce cycle times.
Promote audit readiness across the organization by improving visibility, accountability, and coordination.
Assist in implementing tools or systems that enhance audit tracking and reporting capabilities.
Support cross-functional initiatives that advance the Controller’s Office priorities, including process improvements, reporting enhancements, and enterprise financial transparency efforts.
Support ad hoc analyses, data coordination, and information requests from senior leadership, state agencies, and external stakeholders.
