About The Position

The Carle Health Audiology and Hearing Services team is offering a Comprehensive Audiology Externship Program for the 2026-27 academic year for current AuD students interested in gaining clinical experience with a robust Audiology and ENT practice in Illinois. This externship is a full-time, paid externship offering a $10,000 stipend. The program provides an opportunity to experience a full-scope Audiology practice serving patients in Central Illinois. Carle’s Audiology and Hearing Services Department offers a full range of diagnostic and rehabilitation services, including adult and pediatric evaluation, hearing aid services, cochlear implant and BAHS evaluation and fitting, ototoxic monitoring, vestibular evaluation, auditory evoked potentials, and newborn hearing screening/follow-up. The externship will primarily be located at the new outpatient clinic in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, with opportunities in branch locations in Danville and Mattoon. The extern will work under the direct supervision of IL-licensed, ASHA-certified Audiologists for three academic semesters, gaining experience with a diverse patient population of all ages. Opportunities for clinical observation with the Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery team will be available. The department has 6 Audiologists, 6 state-of-the-art sound suites, and dedicated fitting suites. Annually, 10-12 students rotate through the clinic. By the end of the externship, students will have gained valuable clinical experience and skills to confidently work independently post-graduation.

Requirements

  • Current AuD students in good academic standing.
  • Completion of 3 years of education at an Accredited Audiology Doctoral program.
  • Successful completion of practicum classes encompassing audiologic diagnosis and treatment with patients of all ages.
  • High level of professionalism.

Responsibilities

  • Gain clinical experience in a busy, full-scope Audiology practice.
  • Provide care for patients within Central Illinois.

  • Work under the direct supervision of IL-licensed, ASHA-certified Audiologists.
  • Obtain clinical experience in branch locations in Danville and Mattoon.
  • Treat a diverse patient population with various needs, working with patients of all ages.
  • Observe the Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery team if desired.
