About The Position

Columbia College Chicago, an acclaimed undergraduate and graduate institution focused on arts, communications, and public relations, is seeking an AUDIO ENGINEER (Part-Time). This role supports the Music Department by providing audio support for classes and events in various facilities, including the Concert Hall, Sherwood Recital Hall, and classrooms. The position requires flexibility to work afternoons, evenings, and weekends.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, plus two years’ experience of running equipment and live sound, or equivalent combination of education, certification, experience, and/or training.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule when needed.
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse individuals in a positive and constructive manner while appreciating the unique contributions of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and social identities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide audio support for afternoon, evening, and weekend classes and events in Music Department facilities.
  • Manage all aspects of live performances, including setup, teardown, front of house, monitors, projections, lighting, and audio systems (amplifiers, keyboards, microphones, mixers, video cameras, switchers).
  • Handle all aspects of performance recordings, including setup, teardown, multi-track backup, video and audio recording, editing, mastering, and publishing concerts to YouTube and shared student folders.
  • Manage tracking and recording of video and audio for non-performance tracking sessions, including setup, teardown, tracking, and backing up recordings.
  • Reset Ensemble rooms after 9:00 pm for morning classes.
  • Oversee Music Center video monitor broadcasts, including logos, notices, and event information, and remove outdated material.
  • Schedule and oversee volunteer concert hall tech crews.
  • Approve space requests for ensemble rooms.
  • Oversee work-study students.
  • Perform inventories and tagging of new equipment.
  • Prepare backstage gear for bands performing at outside events.
  • Maintain daily concert hall reports detailing setup, operation, volume levels, striking, volunteer involvement, skill levels, areas for improvement, and equipment condition.
  • Maintain an organized and clean workspace.
  • Provide audio support for college-wide events (e.g., Convocation, Manifest, Columbia Weekend) as needed.
  • Oversee the recording archive process, including saving performances to external hard drives, labeling drives, and maintaining a FileMaker Pro database.
  • Assist with equipment and technical needs in classrooms and the Concert Hall.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
