About The Position

The Attorney regularly represents the company in matters of importance in which the facts and legal issues are at times difficult or ambiguous, and where the matters are regularly pressed or contested in formal proceedings or in negotiations with counterparties or other stakeholders. The incumbent works independently in investigating the facts, searching legal precedents, defining the legal and factual issues, drafting legal documents, and developing recommendations, strategies, and legal conclusions. Requirements

  • Knowledge of applicable legal and regulatory matters (in or outside of Michigan) sufficient to work independently in practice area and ability to lead cases or projects of low- to moderate-complexity
  • Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to perform thorough legal research and writing
  • Ability to analyze facts and provide advice on the applicable law
  • Demonstratable tact and diplomacy in dealing with clients and colleagues
  • Strong legal and analytical skills with an understanding of the importance of client objectives and excellent judgment in advising clients
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree with a minimum of two (2) years of experience as an attorney within a law firm and/or as in-house counsel.

Responsibilities

  • Manage outside counsel and legal vendors, when appropriate
  • Conduct thorough legal research pertaining to unusual circumstances or important policy considerations.
  • Analyze the facts as they pertain to the applicable law and provide guidance to the client; communicating decisions in an easily understood way.
  • Collaborate with others on non-routine written presentations, for review of overall soundness of legal reasoning and consistency with organization strategy
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to clients.
  • Follow and expect adherence to accepted protocols and processes for completing tasks
  • Foster and maintain positive relationships with clients, opposing counsel, co-workers, and others
  • Advise clients on requirements for compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations, provide legal guidance to others (including the Legal Department) to assist them in accomplishing their work
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to clients, providing legal counsel on a potentially broad range of corporate and business matters as applicable to their practice area.
  • Handle all aspects of work, including by way of example, drafting and negotiating contracts, managing litigation or regulatory matters (e.g., drafting discovery and legal pleadings and briefs, attending hearings), advising on corporate and governance issues, and assisting with mergers and acquisitions
  • Represent the company externally in matters such as negotiations, regulatory or court proceedings, or meetings with customers or other stakeholders
  • Other duties as assigned or may be necessary
