About The Position

The New Jersey Lawyers’ Fund for Client Protection (the “Fund”) is a Committee of the Supreme Court of New Jersey which exists to return client trust monies that have been stolen by disciplined or deceased New Jersey attorneys. The Fund seeks an experienced attorney who is highly organized and detail oriented with excellent legal writing, analytical and communication skills to serve as Deputy Counsel. This position is responsible for the Fund’s collection practice, securing recovery from respondents indebted to the Fund as well as procuring payment from collateral sources and representing the Fund in legal proceedings in both State and Federal court. The Fund’s Deputy Counsel also serves as Secretary to the Fund’s Board of Trustees and is primarily responsible for updating the Fund’s Code of Policy as well as maintaining records of Board meetings and determinations. The Deputy Counsel is a key member of the Fund’s Legal Team, working under the supervision of the Deputy Director and in coordination with the Fund’s Director, Senior Counsel, Investigator, paralegals and other staff, to maximize recovery and ensure the accuracy of Trustee records.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an American Bar Association-approved law school
  • One year of experience in legal research and analyzing and evaluating legal documents, rules, regulations, and/or legislation.
  • Attorney-at-Law with a plenary license in the State of New Jersey and having Supreme Court Good Standing Status of Active.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of experience as a Judicial Law Clerk may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Responsibilities

  • Represent the Fund in Superior Court and Bankruptcy Court proceedings, preparing all necessary pleadings
  • Work with the Fund’s Investigator and paralegal staff to identify assets and execute as appropriate to secure repayment to the Fund
  • Conduct negotiations and propose repayment plans to the Fund’s Trustees based upon the financial situation of respondents
  • Monitor respondent status including tracking respondent’s place of residence, employment and assets to increase Fund recoveries
  • Monitor and enforce compliance with respondent payment plans
  • Represent the Fund at Comprehensive Enforcement Program hearings
  • Compile Trustee meeting minutes, determination lists and other proceeding records
  • Analyze claims for precedential value and track updates to revise the Fund’s Code of Policy annually
  • Prepare banking reconciliations for the Fund’s checking and emergent accounts in conjunction with the Fund’s accountant
  • Monitor status of filed “No-Discipline” claims and recommend conversion or dismissal of claims as needed
  • Attend and/or conduct presentations at local and national conferences as part of the Fund’s Legal Team
