About The Position

ChangeLab Solutions is seeking an Attorney for a fixed term of two (2) years, aligned with grant funding. This role involves providing legal research and analysis within interdisciplinary project teams, producing high-quality written materials, developing customized trainings (in-person and virtual), and offering technical assistance to partners and clients, including government agencies, community-based organizations, policymakers, and public officials nationwide. The ideal candidate will be based in Sacramento, California, Los Angeles, California, or Georgia, with consideration for other locations if a candidate in a preferred region cannot be secured. The organization's mission is to create healthier communities through equitable laws and policies, working to dismantle oppressive systems and promote health equity.

Requirements

  • JD; must be a member of a state bar and licensed to practice law in the United States.
  • 2-4 years of relevant legal experience (e.g., public agency, city attorney, county counsel, office of legislative counsel, nonprofit legal organization, law firm).
  • Experience in conducting legal research, analysis, and writing.
  • Ability to translate complex public policy and legal issues into accessible and understandable concepts for a lay audience.
  • Strong attention to detail in written and oral communication.
  • Strong computer skills, including MS Word and email, and the capacity to learn and master new systems.
  • Cultural humility and deep commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Strong problem-solving mentality and approach to work.
  • Strong collaboration skills coupled with the capacity to work independently in a remote or hybrid work environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and take personal initiative.

Responsibilities

  • Research, analyze, and synthesize primary and secondary research sources (statutes, regulations, case law, interviews, reports, etc.) to formulate policy and legal interventions.
  • Research and analyze federal, state, and local laws and policies.
  • Draft legal memoranda.
  • Draft model legislation for state and local public agencies.
  • Contribute to the preparation of resources such as fact sheets, checklists, policy guides, toolkits, and model policies, as well as scholarly articles, op-eds, and blog posts.
  • Provide technical assistance on policy and legal matters to policymakers, advocates, public agency staff, and community groups.
  • Develop and deliver engaging, interactive trainings and presentations at workshops, conferences, and webinars.
  • Contribute to internal and external dialogue that advances the organization's approach to policy change.
  • Actively collaborate within and across interdisciplinary teams.
  • Participate in external calls, webinars, and meetings with clients.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
