About The Position

Legal Aid of Southeast and Central Ohio (LASCO) is seeking a dedicated and professional Staff or Senior Attorney for its Athens, Ohio office. This role involves providing comprehensive legal services for civil issues, aligning with LASCO's mission to offer civil legal aid and advocacy to overcome unfairness, reduce poverty, and increase opportunity. The attorney will balance systemic advocacy with direct legal representation, contributing to impact work within a collaborative team environment.   • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and admitted to the Bar of the State of Ohio (or expected to obtain admission within 12 months from date of hire)

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal counsel and advice, as well as direct representation in areas including housing, public benefits, tax, domestic, consumer, education, employment, and re-entry.
  • Collaborate with partner organizations in providing legal assistance through special projects and grants.
  • Handle all functions related to legal advocacy, from intake to representation before local, state, appellate, and federal courts, and relevant agencies.
  • Maintain a caseload that includes both direct service and impact work.
  • Participate in substantive teams focused on in-depth legal area learning and addressing systemic issues.
  • Participate in outreach activities, clinics, and community events.
  • Collaborate with other legal services attorneys on statewide advocacy.
  • Promote community relations and build community relationships by engaging with the public and partner service providers.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development, including CLE-approved trainings.
