About The Position

This is a temporary position with the Office of State Human Resources, Temporary Solutions division. The agency's mission is to provide a solid Human Resource management foundation, responsible oversight, and creative solutions through a collaborative approach with all stakeholders to maximize the potential of our greatest asset – OUR EMPLOYEES. This position is located at 114 W Edenton St - Wake County and is assigned to the Department of Justice. The hourly rate of pay is $35.20, based on education and/or years of relevant work experience. Permanent and time-limited NC State Government employees must separate from their permanent or time-limited position to work in a temporary position. All temporary employees are limited to one NC State Government temporary assignment at a time. Individuals hired into a temporary State job must be fully qualified. OSHR supports the Governor's Job Ready initiative and seeks to expand a temporary skill set to enhance their qualifications for State government and private sector jobs. Exposure to an agency's culture, process, procedures, and potential learning opportunities can provide valuable experience to those who may seek permanent employment with the state.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the drafting and reviewing of pleadings, discovery, briefs, and other items generated through this high-volume litigation position.
  • Routine representation of the client-agency at hearings, including pretrial conferences, motions hearings, and evidentiary hearings.
  • Defend civil actions for serious personal injury, wrongful death, medical malpractice or property damage brought against the State pursuant to Tort Claims Act, N.C.G.S. §143-291, et seq.
  • Respond on an as needed basis to queries from the client-agency regarding negligence and risk management issues.
  • Operate as part of a high-volume litigation team in providing litigation representation and communication/coordinating litigation efforts with the client-agency.
  • Draft pleadings.
  • Respond to written discovery, inquiries of the court, and the client-agency.
  • Appear at hearings.
  • Draft appellate pleadings as needed.
  • Investigation of claims.
  • Drafting of responsive pleadings.
  • Conducting discovery.
  • Attendance at all pretrial hearings, trials, and appellate events.
