About The Position

The North Carolina Department of Justice, led by the Attorney General of North Carolina, represents the state, state agencies, and elected officials, and defends the rights of the people of North Carolina. The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Additionally, the Department of Justice includes the North Carolina State Crime Lab, the North Carolina Justice Academy, and the Sheriffs’ and Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Divisions. This Public Safety Attorney I position will individually litigate cases for the Public Safety Section from start to finish in federal and state courts from federal civil rights claims to personnel actions. This position provides professional litigation services, legal analysis, and thoughtful, meaningful legal advice to mid-level, senior, and executive managers of client agencies and internally at NC DOJ. The client agencies include the Department of Public Safety, State Highway Patrol, State Bureau of Investigation, and Adult Corrections. This position may also assist other attorneys in the section on complex matters in the areas of civil rights law. This position shares responsibility with several other attorney positions for providing all legal support services and such other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Licensed to practice law by the North Carolina State Bar.

Nice To Haves

  • 2-3 years of progressive civil litigation experience preferred.
  • Experience presenting in court preferred.
  • Legal research and writing experience preferred, including drafting motions and discovery requests and responses.
  • Demonstrated experience in civil rights litigation, personnel actions, and/or high volume practice preferred.
