About The Position

Boston College is seeking an experienced and energetic athletic maintenance staff member to report to the Supervisor, Fields, Athletic Maintenance. The role is responsible for providing Boston College Athletics and the public with clean and safe athletic facilities and playing surfaces. This includes maintaining natural grass surfaces, applying fertilizers and plant protectants, repairing irrigation systems, field marking and painting, maintaining synthetic playing surfaces, stadium maintenance, and upkeep of surrounding landscapes, walks, parking lots, and planting beds. The position also supports outdoor recreation areas like tennis and basketball courts, and arena maintenance including the rink and basketball floor, as well as event setups and breakdowns. The department supports various University events such as commencement, masses, tailgating, alumni weekends, and concerts.

Requirements

Must have current Massachusetts driver’s license.
Must have current Massachusetts applicator pesticides license.
Must be able to obtain Massachusetts 2A hoisting license within 6 months of hire.
Ability to operate field maintenance equipment: mowers, aerators, spreaders, sprayers, tractors, golf carts.
Strong skills in reading diagrams, as well as written and verbal communication.
Proven ability to work and communicate well with Athletic Maintenance staff and others, including Athletics Department, BC Facilities Services staff, students, athletes, coaches, and contracted vendors.
Ability to work independently and with others on projects and tasks with sensitive timelines.
Ability to work in extreme cold and hot weather.

Nice To Haves

Minimum 1+ years working in golf or athletic turf.
2 or 4 year degree in Turfgrass or related field (i.e. horticulture).
Current Restricted Pesticide License.
Safely operate turf maintenance equipment vehicles and snow removal machinery.
Experience in maintaining and repairing a block irrigation system.
Experience in the operation of field marking/painting and field layout.
Maintenance and operation of reel type mowers both walk behind and ride on.
Proven experience in maintenance of highly maintained turfgrass playing surfaces including baseball fields, football fields, softball fields.
Strong mechanical skills and troubleshooting skills.
Experience in the maintenance and operation of ice rinks and resurfacing equipment.

Responsibilities

Maintain highly maintained natural grass surfaces.
Spray and spread fertilizer and plant protectants with spray rig and/or spreaders.
Repair irrigation systems.
Perform field marking and painting.
Maintain synthetic playing surfaces.
Perform stadium maintenance.
Maintain assigned surrounding landscapes, walks, parking lots, and planting beds.
Maintain outdoor recreation areas, including tennis and basketball courts.
Perform arena maintenance, including rink and basketball floor.
Assist with event setups and breakdowns for University events.
Perform daily tasks such as trash removal, blowing, mowing, string trimming, field painting, sweeping, raking, shoveling, tamping, carrying 50 lb. bags, measuring, cleaning, pushing spreaders, climbing ladders, light mechanics, weeding, and general maintenance.
Maintain assigned common areas and natural and artificial grass playing surfaces.
Safely operate golf carts, tractors, Toolcats, skid steers, mowers, blowers, aerators, utility vehicles, forklifts, top dressers, infield groomers, sprayers, and spreaders.
