About The Position

The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is hiring an Athletic Field Maintenance Worker to help maintain and prepare athletic fields and facilities for games, practices, and tournaments. The position involves hands-on groundskeeping, field grooming and marking, painting, landscaping, facility upkeep, and safe operation of grounds maintenance equipment. The role supports the department’s mission to connect and enrich the community through exceptional experiences and helps ensure sports facilities are safe, clean, and ready for use.

The work is performed in outdoor and office environments, near moving traffic and around vehicles, with occasional work at construction sites, in warehouses, and in shops. Employees may encounter varied weather, equipment, noise, fumes, chemicals, and other exposures. The role requires manual labor, attention to detail, customer service, and the ability to follow directions and work effectively with colleagues and the public.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of training and/or experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Less than one year of experience in groundskeeping, maintenance, or related work; equivalent training and/or experience may be substituted.
• Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
• Knowledge of athletic fields and maintenance equipment, including Sand Pro, line markers, and paint machines.
• Knowledge of basic mathematical concepts and filing and record-keeping principles applicable to federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety principles, methods, and practices.
• Ability to follow directions and meet standards while paying attention to detail and operating assigned tools and equipment.
• Customer service skills.
• Ability to perform manual labor necessary to maintain athletic fields.
• Ability to perform basic math computations to lay out athletic fields accurately according to provided specifications.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
• Ability to operate standard grounds maintenance equipment.
• Ability to work in all weather conditions and follow safety protocols.
• Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

Responsibilities

• Prepare athletic fields for games and practices by grooming, marking, and painting.
• Perform landscaping tasks, including mowing, edging, blowing, and sod replacement.
• Maintain and clean facilities, including repairing fencing and removing litter.
• Track maintenance records and perform preventative equipment care.
• Support cleanup and repair efforts during inclement weather.
• Operate a variety of grounds maintenance equipment safely and efficiently.
