JOB SUMMARY Under the general supervision of the Manager of Grounds and Landscape Services and/or designees, performs duties of a Light Equipment Operator with major responsibility for the operation of motorized riding lawn mowing equipment, tractors, sweepers and other small motorized equipment and performs landscaping duties as directed.

Requirements

  • Must be able to perform skilled driving and operations of equipment and vehicles which include half ton to four ton; two axle trucks with up to five-speed transmissions; small wheel-type tractors, including those with special purpose attachments, such as backhoes, mowers, buckets, blades, cultivators, and rakes; trench diggers, loaders ¼ to 1 cubic yard or less bucket capacity.
  • Ability to service and make minor repairs to equipment operated.
  • Knowledge of the rules of safe driving and the provisions of the State of California Vehicle Code pertaining to operation of vehicle described in the appropriate class.
  • Knowledge of the State of California General Industrial Safety orders related to assigned tasks of the class, particularly those related to the vehicle and equipment operations, construction methods and practices, and the lifting and moving of heavy loads.
  • Ability to recognize safety hazards and to follow practices and laws to insure safety.
  • Ability to follow manuals and guidelines pertaining to operation of state vehicles.
  • Ability to load and unload vehicles correctly and safely.
  • Ability to operate a street sweeper.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience working in a university or large institutional setting.
  • Follows all Departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
  • Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.
  • Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
  • Valid CA Driver's license, good driving record and equivalent to one year of paid or regularly assigned driving experience in a job involving operating of a delivery vehicle, truck, tractor, bus, or automotive maintenance equipment required.

Responsibilities

  • Operates all self-propelled, motor powered, riding lawn mowing equipment, including tractors, Sweepers, Fork Lift, Pressure Washer and other equipment related to landscape maintenance.
  • Assist with landscaping functions as needed, such as assisting with weeding, planting, cultivating, watering, fertilizing, and light pruning of shrubs, hedges, small tree, flowers; using small hand and power equipment.
