About The Position

Provides leadership and guidance in initiating, developing, and improving the interscholastic athletic program for all students. This role involves organizing, administering, and supervising the operation of the school athletic program, working collaboratively with county-wide coordinators to ensure a quality athletic program. The position requires initiating, organizing, maintaining, developing, and evaluating extra-curricular athletic activities, attending relevant meetings, and supervising the inspection of athletic facilities. A key aspect of this role is managing the athletic budget, securing coaches, and planning for various athletic teams including schedules, practice areas, transportation, and facility maintenance. The Athletic Director is also responsible for promoting positive public relations with the community and parent groups, supporting the athletic boosters' organization, and managing equipment and awards. This role interprets athletic rules and regulations, develops codes of conduct, and plans recognition events like the annual athletic banquet. The position involves administrative supervision of all athletic events, evaluation of coaches, and engaging in professional development activities. Additionally, the Athletic Director coordinates community use of school facilities and assigns security personnel for events. Monitoring student athlete achievement and participation outcomes, coordinating extra-curricular duties for teachers, and performing other assigned duties are also part of the responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree.
  • Three years of successful teaching.
  • Leadership experience in interscholastic athletics.
  • Evidence of professional development in athletic administration.
  • Possession of a Maryland Educator Certificate appropriate to the area of assignment.
  • National Registered Athletic Administrator (RAA) issued by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) OR master’s degree in sports/athletic administration from an accredited university.
  • National Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) issued by the NIAAA. (Must obtain CAA within three years of hire into this position classification).
  • Possession of, or eligibility for, a Maryland Educator License appropriate to the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of leadership of interscholastic athletics.
  • Knowledge of athletic materials and equipment.
  • Knowledge of effective instructional techniques.
  • Knowledge of and skill in the use of database, internet, spreadsheet, word processing, and related applications.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with students, parents, administrators, and others.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts.
  • Ability to supervise students and manage behavior.
  • Ability to effectively maintain confidential information.
  • Excellent organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain responsibility for organizing, administering, and supervising the operation of the school athletic program.
  • Work with the county-wide coordinator of athletics in providing a quality athletic program.
  • Initiate, organize, maintain, develop, and evaluate extra-curricular athletic activities.
  • Attend all meetings involving areas of responsibility.
  • Supervise the inspection of athletic facilities and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate school administrator.
  • Initiate procedures for care and use of the locker rooms and for security.
  • Prepare and submit the athletic budget to the principal and maintain financial records.
  • Work with the principal to secure needed coaches with special emphasis on the selection of volunteer coaches, and personnel not otherwise employed by Baltimore County Public Schools.
  • Plan, prepare, and/or supervise for each athletic team: seasonal schedules, practice areas, policy governing the receiving of visiting teams, bus transportation, officials’ assignments, and facilities maintenance.
  • Promote and enhance good public relations with community and parent groups.
  • Initiate and support the work of the athletic boosters’ organization.
  • Provide for equipment/uniform repair, storage, replacement, and inventory.
  • Administer the athletic award policies at the local, county, and state levels.
  • Interpret county and state athletic rules and regulations.
  • Develop and enforce a standard code of conduct designed in cooperation with coaches and administrators.
  • Plan, prepare, and/or supervise recognition of athletic accomplishments of students and coaches including but not limited to the annual athletic banquet.
  • Supervises, in an administrative capacity, all athletic events.
  • Assists principal in supervising and evaluating the effectiveness of coaches.
  • Provide written evaluations of all coaches.
  • Engage in professional activities that contribute to leadership development.
  • Schedule and coordinate community use of school facilities and grounds in coordination with the principal and the Department of Facilities Management.
  • Assign security personnel for all student activities and athletic events.
  • Monitor and assess student athlete achievement and participation outcomes with appropriate data collection and analysis.
  • Coordinate and assign teachers for extra-curricular duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
