About The Position

The Parks and Recreation Department has a full-time opening for an Athletic Assistant I or II. Applicants will be considered for I or II based on Level Minimum Qualifications listed below. Performs paraprofessional work assisting with planning, organizing, supervising athletic programs, assists with daily operations of the recreation center including maintenance tasks. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Recreation Facility Manager or Athletic Manager. Assist with supervision exercised over part-time personnel. Assist in creating and maintaining budget sheets for current and new programming along with the marketing of programs. Work includes weeknight and weekend hours.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in recreation, physical education, or related field with some experience in organized athletic program administration.
  • Or a combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, abilities, and skills to complete the essential functions and job responsibilities of this position.
  • Possession of valid North Carolina driver’s license.
  • Must possess or obtain first aid, CPR, and AED certifications within 12 months.
  • 3 years of full-time experience in organized athletic program administration with one division specific certification or 5 years of full-time experience in organized athletic program administration (for Level II).
  • General knowledge of the principles and practices of professional recreation or athletic program work.
  • Some knowledge of ball field maintenance techniques and practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with the public and program participants.
  • Ability to schedule and coordinate athletic programs.
  • Ability to provide working leadership to a group of program participants.
  • Skill in the use of instruments, tools or other equipment used in recreation facility and field maintenance activities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with associates, activity participants and the general public.

Nice To Haves

  • One division specific certification required: Certified Sports Administrator (CSA), Certified Youth Sports Administrator (CYSA), Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) (for Level II).

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the planning, organization, and facilitation of various athletic programs including youth and adult recreation programs and organized sports training and competitions.
  • Performs safety checks on facilities and equipment before setting up for various programs; restores facilities and equipment as needed after programs conclude.
  • Communicates effectively and courteously with the public and staff.
  • Assists in creating budget for current and new programming; documents expenditures; prepares programing reports and surveys.
  • Supervises youth volunteer staff for children’s athletic programs.
  • Assists in the marketing of programs and events, including social media, email blasts and physical flyers.
  • Assists in supervising and training part-time staff; participates in recruitment and selection process; recommends appropriate candidates for hire; recommends disciplinary and termination actions.
  • Maintains contracts and other documentation for vendors.
  • Occasionally drives town bus/van for programming needs.
  • Assists in recreation center front desk operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
