About The Position

Under general supervision, the Athletic Academic Advisor provides holistic academic support for all NCAA Division I CSUN student-athletes in conjunction with the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. The incumbent is responsible for monitoring and reviewing the NCAA Academic Eligibility of multiple athletic teams. This includes course selection, graduation planning, academic progress checking, communication of major requirements, referral to campus resources, and knowledge of campus policies for incoming and continuing student-athletes.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a job-related field.
  • Equivalent to two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field.
  • Knowledge of academic advising principles, degree requirements, graduation planning, campus policies, and student support resources within an equity-minded environment.
  • Knowledge of NCAA initial and continuing academic eligibility requirements, eligibility projections, recruiting meetings, certification processes, and applicable institutional policies.
  • Skill in developing academic support plans, reviewing academic analytics and professor progress reports, identifying student needs, making referrals, and maintaining accurate student records.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with student-athletes, faculty, staff, coaches, athletic administrators, and campus partners while handling sensitive academic information with accuracy and professionalism.

Nice To Haves

  • A Master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
  • Additional specialized and relevant experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Responsibilities

  • Provide and Coordinate Academic Support (Academic Support Plan development, coordinate with Athletic Academic Support Coordinator and Coaches, provide Academic Specialist meetings, provide referrals, review Matador Achievement Center (MAC) analytics daily/weekly, review Education Advisory Board (EAB) Professor Progress Reports, etc.)
  • Responsible for NCAA Academic Eligibility for assigned teams (Understanding Initial eligibility requirements, conduct academic recruiting meetings, provide eligibility projections, participate in eligibility certification process, etc.)
  • Collaborate with CSUN faculty and staff, and CSUN Athletic Department staff, coaches, and administration.
  • Keep all student files/documents updated and accurate, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
