About The Position

Upswing is seeking writing tutors, who are graduates with a degree in English/writing or writing professionals, to assist with their asynchronous and synchronous writing services. This role involves providing essay reviews aligned with Upswing's tutoring philosophy, which focuses on developing students' writing skills. Tutors will also have the opportunity to meet synchronously with students in a virtual classroom. The position is not for proofreaders or editors, but for individuals familiar with tutoring methodology and passionate about fostering critical thinking skills in students. Experience in a Writing Center is highly preferred.

Requirements

• 1+ year of college/university Writing Center tutoring (and training) experience.
• Fast and reliable Internet connection.
• Access to MS Word/Google Docs.
• A laptop or desktop computer.
• 3.5 GPA or higher with a transcript demonstrating success in a writing-intensive program.
• Familiarity with the Socratic method of tutoring, prioritizing inquiry and higher-order concerns.
• Ability to receive payments via PayPal.

Nice To Haves

• Writing Center experience is highly preferred.
• Familiarity with tutoring methodology.
• Love working with students who are developing critical thinking skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide thorough, insightful, and actionable written feedback on student essays and writing assignments.
• Assist students in becoming better writers through an asynchronous (and synchronous) tutoring approach.
• Meet synchronously with students via a virtual classroom.
• Review a diversity of writing, including health sciences, argumentative essays, history, and potentially controversial subjects like politics and religion.
• Onboard within 2-5 business days after being hired.
