About The Position

About the Position: The Assistant Deputy State Fire Marshal in this position assists in the performance of statewide fire and life safety program duties by providing professional level work in administration of the Fire Sprinkler, Fireworks, and Fire Safe Cigarette programs. As a compliance program specialist, this position is responsible for: Assisting with enforcement of the Fire Sprinkler Law, Fireworks Law, Cigarette Ignition Propensity Law and associated WACs. Conducting routine civil or administrative investigations characterized by: established precedent and procedures, little controversy, single issues, or other investigations of similar scope. Providing technical assistance and consultation during the complaint intake process. Inspecting and reviewing state, county, municipal, business, and private records. Interpreting and applying relevant statutes, rules, and codes. Maintain compliance-specific data tracking systems. Serving as a technical expert in the Fire Sprinkler Law, Fireworks Law, Cigarette Ignition Propensity Law programs. Processing applications and fees for licensing and certification issuance. Assist local jurisdictions in understanding the applicable statute, rule, or code. Recommending necessary improvements to the data collection system. Assisting supervisor and other program staff with managing, developing, and implementing fire-related course curriculum, including curriculum development and updates, and course instruction as needed. Coordination and scheduling of presentations, training, and other events, and professional level work supporting those events. Participates in developing and presenting fire safety programs to interested groups, including the residential fire sprinkler demonstration trailer, fireworks training, and other fire and life safety initiatives. This position reports to the Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal of the Education, Enforcement, and Analytics Section. About the Division: The Fire Prevention Division is active in providing a variety of Fire Protection services including all risk mobilization , fire inspections on licensed care facilities , plan review of schools, data collection , analysis, hazardous materials training , and the licensing and certification of the fire sprinkler , fireworks , and cigarette industries to both public and private sectors. These sections provide planning, training, and technical assistance for firefighters and emergency responders who are mobilized for statewide emergencies such as hazardous materials, earthquakes, nuclear facilities, as well as other high-risk situations. Requirements

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license due to in-state travel required to complete job duties.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Knowledge of fire and building codes, fire prevention and/or police investigative procedures and techniques, certification and program administration requirements.
  • Demonstrate aptitude and ability to learn and apply statutes and rules, state adopted fire/building codes, nationally recognized fire protection and fire prevention standards, standard building construction methods and materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with public, industry representatives, and government officials in performing duties.
  • Must have a strong knowledge and command of MS Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams.
  • Ability to write and speak clearly, concisely, accurately and informatively.
  • Ability to research, evaluate, and draw conclusions from data; support recommendations with facts and analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively analyze information and communicate decisions and recommendations related to fire and life safety requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine audits and/or investigations of the fire sprinkler, fireworks, and fire safe cigarette industries for compliance with applicable RCWs and WACs.
  • Serve as a technical expert in the Fire Sprinkler Law, Fireworks Law, Cigarette Ignition Propensity Law programs.
  • Assist in the development and presentation of fire safety and prevention programs to reduce fires within the state.
  • Schedule, coordinate, and provide professional level work supporting conferences and training, and development of program materials.
  • Maintain compliance-specific data tracking systems.
  • Perform research and statistical analysis.
  • Provide reports and presentations of Section and/or Bureau level results and performance.
