About The Position

Variety is seeking an Associate Web Editor, Nights and Weekend, based in Los Angeles, who can write and edit stories with extreme speed and precision on tight deadlines. This role will cover all topics within Variety's scope, with the ability to quickly pivot to breaking news. The editor must be capable of self-publishing clean copy and possess basic copy editing skills. The position emphasizes speed, accuracy, and strong news judgment. Additional duties include assisting with website maintenance, assembling newsletters, and creating artwork and social media posts.

Requirements

• Ability to write and edit stories very quickly on extremely tight deadlines.
• Ability to stop quickly in order to pick up any breaking urgent news.
• Ability to self-publish clean copy.
• Familiarity with basic copy editing.
• Speed, precision, and great news instincts.
• Highly-motivated self-starter.
• Excellent writing and editing skills.
• Not afraid to reach out to studios and publicists for comments on reports.
• Energetic.
• A few years of experience covering news in an assertive manner.
• One to four years of experience covering the media industry.
• Experience writing and editing short-form pieces on a tight deadline.
• Understanding of the entertainment media landscape.
• Experience using WordPress or a CMS equivalent, as well as SocialFlow and social media platforms.
• Understanding of and obsession with the entertainment industry.

• SEO knowledge a plus.
• Background in entertainment media a plus.
