About The Position

The Associate Vice-President, Student Life is responsible for assisting the Vice-President Student Life in all capacities, as well as supporting relationships between the AMS and campus organizations such as the Thunderbird Athlete’s Council (TAC), Residence Hall Association (RHA), Student Alumni Council (SAC), Interfraternity Council (IFC), UBC Sororities, Interfaculty First Year Committee (IFYC), and other similar campus organizations and subsidiaries. Furthermore, they sit on both the Student Life Caucus and Blue and Gold Society in a non-voting capacity and will support the coordination of their meetings. The Associate Vice-President, Student Life also coordinates with the Vice-President Student Life on a variety of projects and initiatives that involve various aspects of the Executive portfolio. This includes work on research projects like the Student Engagement Survey (SES), event planning for projects such as Interfaculty Cup and Mental Health Week, graphic design of promotional materials, digital media collaborations with student organizations, and support of other executive goals or projects.

Requirements

  • Must be a registered student at UBC Vancouver or one of its affiliated colleges.
  • Must have experience in event planning and delivery, or campus programming.
  • Strength in communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work independently, problem solve and recognize appropriate challenges to escalate.
  • Must be able to work flexibly, adapting to the different needs and limitations of each project.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure.
  • Able to multi-task and manage several projects with different themes.
  • Proven track record of showing initiative and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Be aged between 15 and 30 years old on the start date of the job;
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN); and
  • Be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in project management, preferably with an AMS Club or Constituency, is an asset.
  • Experience with content creation, marketing, branding, or social media strategy is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the VP Student Life in planning and delivering student government events, including Interfaculty Cup, Interfaculty Mental Health Week, and other Student Life programs and initiatives.
  • Attend and contribute to events and student life-related meetings while upholding the values and public image of the AMS.
  • Build and maintain relationships with campus organizations.
  • Support facilitation of collaborative programs and events between clubs, constituencies, and campus groups which run similar programming related to student life and mental health.
  • Support content creation through photography, videography, and graphic design.
  • Maintain detailed records for planning and reflection of events, including project overviews.
  • Support the VP Student Life in staying informed of key events, initiatives, and emerging issues within campus communities.
  • Support with research, investigation, or environmental scan projects to support development of the student life portfolio and AMS as a whole
  • Maintain records and organize findings in an accessible, shareable format for continuity and institutional memory.
  • Support the VP Student Life in preparing and delivering presentations, reports, or proposals to AMS Council, student groups and other key stakeholders.
  • Support the VP Student Life with volunteer hiring and management.
  • Uphold the AMS’s mission, values, constitution, and Strategic Plan.
  • Other duties as required.
