About The Position

The Associate Vice President/Dean of Students plays a vital role in creating the conditions for students to flourish academically, personally, and within the broader University community. Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Associate Vice President/Dean of Students is a senior student affairs leader who provides strategic direction and overall leadership for the Dean of Students Office. Grounded in the Jesuit, Catholic mission and Ignatian vision of education, the AVP/Dean advances a comprehensive approach to student development, care, belonging, and success. The AVP/Dean leads a talented team of student affairs professionals and provides strategic oversight for critical functions including community standards, restorative practices, student conduct, student support and case management, disability services, off-campus student life, behavioral intervention, crisis response, and Title IX-related processes. The successful candidate will be a collaborative and thoughtful leader who can navigate complex student matters with care, sound judgment, and a commitment to fostering a thriving campus community.

Requirements

  • A terminal degree preferred in higher education, counseling psychology, or a related field.
  • Ten or more years of progressively responsible professional experience in student affairs or a related higher education field, including significant leadership and supervisory responsibility.
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex student affairs functions and supervising senior-level professionals.
  • Experience managing sensitive student matters involving conduct, crisis response, behavioral concerns, and institutional risk.
  • Knowledge of student development theory, restorative practices, student conduct, disability services, Title IX, and related higher education policies and regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships with students, faculty, staff, families, senior leaders, and external partners.
  • Strong communication, judgment, strategic thinking, and organizational leadership skills.
  • Commitment to supporting students as whole persons and fostering a campus environment where students can learn, thrive, and belong.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and vision for the Dean of Students Office, ensuring programs, services, and policies advance student learning, development, belonging, and success.
  • Lead and develop a team of senior student affairs professionals, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee University systems related to student conduct, community standards, restorative practices, behavioral intervention, and student support.
  • Use data, assessment, and student feedback to identify opportunities to improve the student experience and address barriers to belonging, engagement, and success.
  • Provide leadership during complex student situations and University crises, supporting effective response, communication, and decision-making.
  • Build strong partnerships across the University and with external stakeholders to support students and strengthen the campus community.
  • Advance a student-centered approach to accountability, care, and community responsibility consistent with Boston College’s mission and values.
  • Each staff member in the Division of Student Affairs is expected to support division and university-wide initiatives, staff events, and serve on committees as needed.
