About The Position

The Associate Underwriter’s primary responsibility is to manage an existing book of renewable business through a demonstration of strong skills in coverage fundamentals, risk assessment, financial proficiency, actuarial fundamentals, marketing and communications, and systems proficiency. Duties may include selecting, analyzing, and underwriting individual risks, managing a renewable book of business with strategic underwriting guidance, monitoring book results and recommending corrective actions, providing input on projects for profitable growth, participating in audits and underwriting meetings, cross-selling opportunities within other Chubb divisions, and traveling less than 25%.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Industry designations – CPCU or AMIM preferred
  • Minimum 3 years of current underwriting/insurance experience
  • Concentration in Inland Marine products including Builder’s Risk preferred
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, and analyze significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Effective time and desk management, balancing a large book of renewal business
  • Able to work collaboratively and prioritize in a matrix environment
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • PC and Microsoft Office Products proficient, Excel skills in particular

Responsibilities

  • Manage an existing book of renewable business.
  • Offer coverage, terms, and conditions that generate a profit for the Company while meeting customer needs.
  • Identify risk exposures, special or common hazards, and appropriate controls.
  • Select risk based on exposure and risk analysis.
  • Analyze claims and quantify losses.
  • Understand insurance financial fundamentals and their impact on underwriting decisions.
  • Understand loss trends and ratemaking.
  • Quantify risk based on experience history and forecasting methods.
  • Sell and negotiate to achieve bottom line profitability for the Company.
  • Base communications on strategic thinking.
  • Manage producer strategy.
  • Use systems and software programs needed to conduct daily business.
  • Select, analyze, and underwrite individual risks utilizing corporate pricing and reinsurance techniques to obtain desired results within established business plans and assigned authority.
  • Provide strategic underwriting guidance for a renewable book of business, including rate/terms/deductibles.
  • Monitor results of the overall book of business assigned and recommend corrective action as necessary to ensure retention of desirable accounts.
  • Provide quality and timely input on assigned projects to meet the Company’s needs in the changing market and to support profitable growth.
  • Participate in audits and/or underwriting meetings as required.
  • Cross-sell opportunities within other Chubb divisions through promotion of their products and services.
