Associate Tunnel Design Engineer

The Boring CompanyNashville, TN
Onsite

About The Position

The Boring Company was founded to solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic by creating an underground network of tunnels. Today, we are building technology to increase tunneling speed and decrease costs by a factor of 10 or more, with the ultimate goal of making Hyperloop adoption viable and enabling rapid transit across densely populated regions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Geology, Engineering Geology, or related discipline.
  • Internship or academic project experience related to geotechnical engineering, rock mechanics, or underground construction is a plus.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework in geotechnical engineering (soils and rock mechanics), structural analysis, foundation engineering, hydrology, earthquake engineering, engineering geology, or tunnel engineering.
  • Familiarity with basic geotechnical analysis concepts (e.g., slope stability, earth pressures, settlement).
  • Exposure to design tools or software through coursework or internships.
  • Strong analytical skills and willingness to learn in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support the preparation of geotechnical data reports, interpretation reports, and design documentation for tunnel and shaft construction.
  • Assist with temporary support of excavation designs, reports, and drawings.
  • Contribute to tunnel lining design documentation, including basic calculations (e.g., lateral earth pressures).
  • Help perform ground settlement and construction impact analyses for subsurface structures (e.g., shafts, tunnels) and nearby infrastructure (e.g., buildings, utilities).
  • Assist in the development and implementation of settlement monitoring plans.
  • Support planning and execution of geotechnical investigations, including fieldwork coordination and data collection.
  • Help gather and review as-built drawings and existing geotechnical data for subsurface due diligence.
  • Provide input on geotechnical aspects of construction means and methods under guidance from senior engineers.
  • Participate in construction observation and field inspections.
  • Support brick operations with basic geotechnical testing and data tracking.
