About The Position

We are seeking an Associate Systems Engineer to join the systems team supporting the development of our self-propelled battery-electric railcars and vehicles. This is a full-time, 100% in-office role based in St. Louis, MO. You'll contribute across the full systems development lifecycle of an autonomous rail vehicle — requirements engineering, interface management, systems integration, and verification and validation — decomposing customer and operational needs across mechanical, electrical, software, and controls, and helping keep the design honest as it moves from concept to vehicle. You'll work within a team of 1–10 engineers and engage in occasional domestic travel for testing, integration, demonstrations, and customer interactions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Mathematics, or a physical science. Open to December 2026 and May 2027 graduates.
  • 0–2 years of experience with integrated hardware/software systems, including relevant internship, co-op, or university research/project experience.
  • Exposure to the systems engineering lifecycle — requirements, design, integration, verification, validation — through coursework, capstone, or work experience.
  • Ability to write clear, testable requirements and trace a requirement to the test that proves it.
  • Comfortable working across disciplines with mechanical, electrical, software, and controls engineers.
  • Hands-on aptitude — willing to be on the vehicle during integration and test.
  • Willingness to learn new systems and take on work beyond the immediate area of expertise.
  • Fluent in both written and verbal English.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. F-1 OPT is supported.

Nice To Haves

  • MBSE/SysML tooling exposure (Cameo/MagicDraw, Catia Magic, or similar).
  • Requirements-management tooling (DOORS, Jama, Polarion, or similar).
  • Safety-critical systems development — hazard analysis, FMEA, FTA, or a functional-safety standard (ISO 26262, IEC 61508, EN 50126/50128/50129).
  • Autonomous systems development, verification, or test.
  • MATLAB/Simulink or other model-based design and simulation tools.
  • Knowledge of railway systems — U.S. or international — or FRA/AAR regulatory practice.
  • Experience in Agile environments spanning hardware and software.
  • University design competitions or research programs requiring cross-discipline integration.

Responsibilities

  • Capture customer and operational needs and decompose them into clear, testable requirements across mechanical, electrical, software, and controls, maintaining traceability from requirement to test.
  • Support the definition and control of interfaces between subsystems, keeping interface documentation accurate as the design evolves.
  • Participate in bringing subsystems together on real vehicles, and support troubleshooting the issues that only appear at integration.
  • Execute test plans, capture evidence, and support regulatory certification and safety-critical validation activities.
  • Help maintain system architecture artifacts and configuration baselines, including contributions to MBSE/SysML models under senior-engineer direction.

Benefits

  • Medical coverage: We cover 100% of employee medical premiums, plus low-cost dental and vision options.
  • Vacation: Full-time employees enjoy unlimited paid time off.
  • Equity: Full-time employees receive equity in the company.
