Consumers Energy is Michigan’s largest energy provider, serving 6.8 million residents across 68 Lower Peninsula counties. This entry-level Control Room position focuses on learning and mastering the tasks required to safely operate the electric grid according to the Electric Control Center Manual (ECCM). The role involves a 36-month commitment period, during which internal job applications are restricted. The selected candidate must be within commuting distance of the Jackson Service Center in Jackson, MI, or willing to relocate with available assistance. This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship. Within the first 12 months, the Associate System Operator will train to obtain an HVD or LVD certification. Upon certification, they will independently monitor, analyze, and control the electric grid 24/7, ensuring system reliability and timely customer restoration in compliance with ECCM procedures, NERC standards, and regulatory requirements. Responsibilities include managing High Voltage Distribution (HVD) and Low Voltage Distribution (LVD) Substations and Lines, the Metro Underground Distribution Network, Grid Automation Schemes, and interconnection points with Generation and Transmission providers under both normal and emergency conditions. The role also involves administering switching and tagging orders and issuing worker conditions, clearances, and protections, utilizing SCADA systems for remote monitoring, analysis, and control.
