About The Position

Avantor is seeking an Associate Scientist - Downstream for the Bridgewater, NJ location. The Associate Scientist - Downstream will be responsible for the hands-on execution of laboratory experiments for the protein purification process and contribute to the development and optimization of processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or a related scientific field.
  • Hands-on experience with protein purification techniques and downstream processing preferred.
  • Familiarity with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and laboratory safety standards.
  • Strong background in molecular biology, biochemistry, or bioengineering.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Perform duties with the highest regard for safety and quality
  • Ability to understand and follow scientific protocols, policies and procedures
  • Must be flexible, forward-thinking, and motivated
  • Able to act independently and manage responsibilities while following scientific direction
  • Must be able to lift 25lbs minimum
  • Basic computing skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (or equivalent)
  • Skilled at prioritizing tasks, problem solving, and meeting deadlines
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team

Responsibilities

  • Executes and supports downstream purification (e.g. monoclonal antibodies, fusion proteins, etc.) on a bench-scale jointly with other scientists or independently.
  • Conducts pilot-scale material generations with the team.
  • Prepares and executes experimental protocols and analytical test methods under general guidance.
  • Accurately documents all procedures and observations
  • Maintains laboratory area, utilizes safe practices while working in the laboratory environment as per EHS guidelines and policy.
  • Perform bench-scale purification of biologics, such as monoclonal antibodies, bispecific, fusion proteins, or AAV, independently or in collaboration with other scientists.
  • Support pilot-scale material generation and assist in technology transfer activities.
  • Prepare and execute experimental protocols and analytical methods under general guidance.
  • Contribute to the development and optimization of downstream processes.
  • Identify and resolve process development challenges through data-driven experimentation and innovative thinking.
  • Analyze, interpret, and summarize experimental data.
  • Present findings clearly in team meetings and contribute to project decision-making.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments in accordance with SOPs.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of procedures and observations.
  • Assess Avantor’s technologies—such as chromatographic resins, process additives, and single-use technologies—for their effectiveness in biologics purification workflows.
  • Ensure all activities comply with safety, environmental, and quality standards and best practices.
