About The Position

The Associate Regional Director (ARD) is a key member of the Northeast Regional management team and assists the Regional Director in providing strategic and programmatic leadership in the Northeast Region, a 9-state area in which there are 4 programs at present. The ARD is also a key member of the US Management Team, offering support and leadership to national work. The ARD assists the Regional Director in supervision of program staff and volunteers to give regional and local expression to broader organizational goals. The ARD works in close collaboration with US Thematic Directors (for Peacebuilding, Migration and Economic Justice) and participates in US and global staff groups to help ensure program coherence, collaboration, and achievement of systems level change. Additionally, the ARD assists in management of the region’s financial resources (including grant management and compliance), participates in regional and organizational fundraising, and supports outreach with peace and justice organizations within the region. The ARD advises and assists the Regional Director in communications to constituents, the public, and the Religious Society of Friends. They support the Regional Director in working with governance committees and stands in when the Regional Director is on leave or otherwise away from the regional office for an extended period.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in non-profit management, social science or related field
  • Minimum four years of management experience supervising professional staff, with at least 2 years at the middle-management level, in the non-profit sector in required.
  • Demonstrated ability to connect with diverse audiences and to influence situations using tact and diplomacy; ability to persuade and motivate others.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with knowledge of and experience in using consultative decision-making processes; experience working under pressure and adapting to changing situations and priorities.
  • Experience working collaboratively with individuals, groups and organizations.
  • Ability to travel frequently and to work some weekends.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Initiative, creativity, drive, energy and a sense of humor.
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends and to travel, as required.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and within a team environment.
  • Experience with standard Microsoft Office and related technology.

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with US Thematic Directors and Strategy, Learning and Impact staff, foster increased staff understanding and competency in development of Theories of Change and Action, program-based budgeting and program planning, implementation strategies, monitoring, evaluation and reporting, in accordance with AFSC’s strategic plan and within resource constraints.
  • Encourage collaboration among staff members for the sharing of analysis, strategies, methods, and opportunities for synergistic and collaborative programming.
  • Participate in region-wide and national level program development and support, assisting the Regional Director, and Thematic Directors as needed, in working with staff members to ensure that projects and programs are of high quality and effectiveness, and are focused on the mission, goals and objectives of the AFSC.
  • Foster staff understanding and competency in program-based budgeting and program planning, strategies, monitoring, evaluation and reporting, for implementation of the strategic plan of the organization within resource constraints.
  • Encourage and facilitate intra- and inter-regional program collaboration aimed at higher-level program impact.
  • Promote and support effective program advisory/volunteer committees in support of local programs.
  • Supervise program and administrative staff as assigned by the Regional Director.
  • Cultivate a work environment that attracts and maintains a diverse and highly motivated staff.
  • Promote teamwork, common purpose, and continuous professional growth.
  • Responsible for facilitating (through channels) the hiring and termination of regional staff members, as well as contract workers.
  • Assist the Regional Director in ensuring effective regional staff intake, orientation and training.
  • Ensure that consultative decision processes are used in the region.
  • Ensure that staff members under direct supervision follow all AFSC policies and procedures.
  • Assist the Regional Director in ensuring that each program location has an up-to-date security plan.
  • Assist the Regional Director, in collaboration with the Human Resources Department, the Office of Equity, Inclusion, and Culture, and other staff as appropriate, to apply AFSC’s diversity and inclusion efforts and our Affirmative Action policies.
  • Assist the Regional Director with management of the regional budget. As assigned, prepare draft annual budgets for programs as part of the program based planning process; monitoring approved budgets in area of responsibility, and recommend appropriate necessary action to meet budget requirements.
  • Assist in ensuring regional compliance with AFSC financial policies, procedures, and directives.
  • Assist in ensuring good stewardship of AFSC facilities, equipment and other assets.
  • Collaborate with the Regional Director and Development staff to develop and implement fund-raising strategies and plans to achieve fundraising goals.
  • Support regional efforts to secure grant funding and collaborate, as assigned, in major donor identification, cultivation and solicitations as appropriate.
  • Assist the Regional Director as assigned to ensure regional compliance with organizational grant guidelines and standards, taking on delegated grant management responsibilities.
  • Assist the Regional Director in maintaining frequent contact with Corporation members, regional governance committees, and with the Religious Society of Friends. In coordination with the national Friends outreach program, assure AFSC participation in the Yearly Meetings and encourage Friends’ participation in AFSC activities.
  • Advise and assist the Regional Director in representing the viewpoints of the AFSC to constituents and media outlets in the region.
  • Assist the Regional Director in ensuring that public communications originating from staff and volunteers in the region, including Web and social media, are accurate and in accord with AFSC policies and procedures.
  • Actively seek opportunities to collaborate with organizations, professional groups, institutions, etc. that will expand the reach and maximize the effectiveness of the AFSC.
  • When needed, stand in for the Regional Director in AFSC-wide leadership groups, communicating regional realities and perspectives to colleagues, engaging in program consultation and decision-making at an organization-wide level, and conveying those perspectives and decisions to regional staff and committees.
  • Regular attendance and punctuality are required.
