About The Position

The Department of Communication and Journalism at Texas A&M University is seeking a tenured Associate Professor for the Communication & Media Science Division. This full-time, nine-month faculty position, starting August 1, 2027, involves tenure review upon hire. The role is part of a strategic faculty cluster focused on the communicative foundations of democratic society, aiming to enhance understanding of communication, public knowledge, citizenship, and civic participation. The university is investing in scholarship that examines how media and communication environments influence public information, individual and community judgments, trust-building, disagreement negotiation, and public life participation. The ideal candidate will have a strong research program in communication science, employing diverse empirical approaches with a theoretical commitment to explaining communication processes. Areas of interest include political communication, public opinion, media effects, civic engagement, misinformation, communication and public knowledge, and democratic deliberation. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a strong research program, publish in leading outlets, secure external funding, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, mentor doctoral students, and contribute to departmental, university, and professional service. As an Associate Professor, they will also provide intellectual leadership, mentor junior faculty, develop graduate education, and foster collaborative research initiatives. The department offers BA/BS degrees in communication, media, and journalism, and MA/PhD degrees in Communication, with over 50 faculty, 35+ graduate students, and approximately 1,700 undergraduates. The department values disciplinary excellence, interdisciplinary engagement, and innovative teaching, fostering a welcoming and supportive academic community.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Communication, Mass Communication, Journalism, Media Studies, or a closely related field.
  • Qualifications appropriate for appointment as a tenured Associate Professor at Texas A&M University through tenure review upon hire.
  • An established program of scholarly achievement demonstrating sustained contributions to communication science.
  • Evidence of excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching.
  • Demonstrated success mentoring graduate students.
  • Demonstrated capacity for leadership in externally visible and externally fundable research.
