About The Position

The Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Louisville seeks an Assistant/Associate Professor Term (Open Rank) whose teaching, scholarship/creative work can contribute to our undergraduate and graduate programs and our internationally recognized African American Theatre Program (AATP). The ideal candidate will be an excellent teacher and director/performer/designer with proven ability to mentor and guide students interested in African American or African Diaspora Theatre. Additionally, they will advise students seeking the Black Performance Studies minor or the AATP Graduate Certificate. They must have a strong commitment to engaged scholarship and a passion for building lasting relationships with campus and community partners and will show evidence of an active agenda in research/creative work about African American/African Diaspora Theatre. Also desirable are: administrative experience, a strong teaching record, research, creative work, and/or study abroad experience in the African Diaspora.
The Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Louisville invites applications for this Assistant/Associate Professor Term position to begin January 1, 2027. The department is home of the first credit-bearing African American Theatre Program (AATP) in the United States and awards a Graduate Certificate in African American Theatre. Candidates will teach up to 5 courses/year in the BS and MFA programs in African American theatre history and performance, lit/criticism, and possible courses in applicant’s specialty.
Candidates whose teaching, research/creative activity, or service shows a commitment to social justice are urged to apply. Candidates are expected to build a publication record appropriate for tenure at a research university. Service expectations include academic advising, mentoring of students, and service on college and graduate committees including MFA thesis committees.

Requirements

• A terminal academic degree (M.F.A. or PhD) or equivalent professional experience with emphasis in African American/African Diaspora Theatre.
• University-level teaching experience.
• Evidence of creative accomplishment.
• Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching and performing/directing/designing.
• Strong commitment to engaged scholarship.
• Active agenda in research/creative work about African American/African Diaspora Theatre.
