Requirements

  • M.D. in ophthalmology.
  • State license to practice and specialized training.
  • Need to have a thorough understanding of eye anatomy, function, and disease.
  • Proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Prescribe corrective lenses, including eyeglasses and contact lenses
  • Perform surgeries to correct eye injuries and conditions, such as cataracts
  • Treat eye diseases, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease
  • Prescribe oral and topical medications to treat eye diseases
  • Advise patients on proper eye care and maintain detailed medical histories
  • Refer patients to subspecialty ophthalmologists for evaluations regarding eye surgery and/or long-term treatment.
