About The Position

The Department Chair accepts the responsibility of providing leadership and maintaining administrative operations of the department in addition to performing the traditional academic duties of teaching, research, and service. The Department Chair reports to the Dean of the College. The workload balance between administration and traditional academic duties is determined by the Dean of the College in conjunction with the Chair. The successful candidate should expect to maintain an active program of research and teaching.

Requirements

  • An earned terminal degree in a field recognized within the discipline.
  • Eligibility for tenure.
  • A solid record of teaching and scholarly activities required for a minimal appointment to the rank of associate professor.
  • Knowledge of general academic policies and curriculum issues.
  • Knowledge of Tennessee Board of Regents policies.
  • Knowledge of accreditation policies where appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Providing leadership and maintaining administrative operations of the department.
  • Performing traditional academic duties of teaching, research, and service.
  • Engaging in constructive problem-solving and making sound decisions.
  • Communicating effectively with faculty and staff within the department, college, university and diverse campus and community constituencies.
  • Working collaboratively with the leadership of other academic and administrative units to develop appropriate policies and/or programs.
  • Promoting student success and faculty excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.
  • Working collaboratively within the college and university.
