About The Position

The Associate Principal's primary purpose is to assist the school principal in the overall administration of the instructional program and campus-level operations. This role provides leadership and direction for improving teaching and learning, and oversees the implementation of district instructional initiatives and educational programs. The position requires a Master's degree, a Texas principal certificate or other appropriate Texas certificate, and certification as a Texas Teacher Evaluation System (TTESS) appraiser. Key skills include a thorough understanding of school operations, strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, and the ability to coordinate campus support operations. A deep understanding of current approaches to effective teaching and learning is essential, along with at least three years of experience as a classroom teacher.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development and evaluation of educational programs, encouraging and supporting innovative instructional programs and technology integration.
  • Serve as an extension to the Curriculum and Instruction department to improve teaching and learning.
  • Serve as the Site Coordinator for the Texas Virtual School Network.
  • Use data to set priorities and establish goals for improving student achievement, promoting research-based instructional strategies.
  • Provide direction and oversight in the evaluation, design, and implementation of rigorous curriculum, quality instruction, and multiple assessment practices.
  • Inspire and lead staff in designing effective teaching and learning experiences and engage staff in meaningful professional development.
  • Promote a positive, caring climate for learning, dealing sensitively and fairly with diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Communicate effectively with students and staff, articulating and promoting high expectations for teaching and student learning.
  • Provide leadership for establishing a professional learning community focused on continuous improvement and facilitate collaboration with key stakeholders.
  • Maintain quality interaction with teachers, students, parents, and the community.
  • Participate in the development of campus improvement plans with staff, parents, and community members.
  • Help develop and maintain information systems to track progress on campus performance objectives and academic excellence indicators.
  • Observe employee performance, record observations, and conduct evaluation conferences.
  • Serve as second appraiser for the designated teacher appraisal system.
  • Assist the principal in interviewing, selecting, and orienting new staff.
  • Identify and act on opportunities for improving teaching and learning, ensuring staff have necessary professional development and ongoing coaching.
  • Supervise operations in the principal’s absence.
  • Help plan daily school activities by participating in the development of class schedules, teacher assignments, and extracurricular activity schedules.
  • Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and board policy.
  • Assist the principal in the development and maintenance of the master schedule.
  • Oversee the campus testing program, including locally developed assessments, state assessments, AP, PSAT, SAT, ACT, Accuplacer, etc.
  • Ensure adequate student supervision during non-instructional periods.
  • Help develop a student discipline management system that results in positive student behavior.
  • Ensure school rules are uniformly observed and student discipline is appropriate and equitable.
  • Conduct conferences on student and school issues with parents, students, and teachers.
  • Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment.
  • Articulate the school’s mission to the community and solicit its support.
  • Demonstrate awareness of school-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.
  • Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
  • Properly maintain district records, adhering to all policies for records maintenance and learning the records retention schedule.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Share supervisory responsibility for professional staff with the school principal.
  • Supervise teachers, custodians, paraprofessionals, clerical personnel, and others as assigned.
