Associate Principal Engineer - Cloud Platform
About The Position
The Associate Principal Engineer – Cloud Platform supports the design and creation of cloud-based products and services to meet Exelixis’s technology needs. The role helps define and design the cloud platform, including cloud automation tools and standards, CI/CD pipelines, DevOps tooling, and AWS account provisioning automation. It also works with application support teams to redefine the interface between cloud platform products and application installation and configuration processes. The position guides major initiatives and complex projects, refines end-to-end development processes, and provides technical expertise on platform strategy and technology direction. It collaborates across organizational levels and with external personnel, advises management and customers on advanced technical matters, oversees infrastructure documentation, and develops solutions to mitigate incidents and maintain platform performance. The role also mentors engineers and evaluates industry trends and platform needs for future growth. There are no supervisory responsibilities.
Requirements
- At least 10 years of experience in cloud infrastructure in a highly available, production environment.
- Advanced knowledge of Amazon Web Services (AWS), especially hosting services such as EC2, RDS, Systems Manager, and IAM.
- Advanced knowledge of infrastructure-as-code tools, especially Terraform.
- Intermediate knowledge of cloud and infrastructure automation.
- Intermediate knowledge of modern development and deployment practices for continuous integration and continuous deployment.
- A master's degree in a relevant field and 9 years of experience; or a bachelor's degree in a relevant field and 11 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education or years of experience.
- Technical certification may be required.

Responsibilities
- Support the translation of overall direction and strategy and communicate it across organizational levels and functions.

- Refine end-to-end development processes, from ideation through CI/CD, security scanning, and production monitoring.

- Solve unusually complex technical problems with innovative solutions and develop long-term strategies for specific projects.
- Serve as a technical expert on new technology direction.
- Communicate strategy across organizational levels and influence executives when needed.
- Lead strategic initiatives and ensure successful execution.
- Represent the organization on advanced projects or programs and advise management and customers on advanced technical research studies and applications.
- Interact with senior external personnel on significant technical matters that may require coordination between organizations.
- Oversee documentation of infrastructure and work instructions for systems and applications.
- Develop approaches and implement solutions to mitigate future incidents.
- Ensure completed work delivers long-term value and maintains platform performance and functionality.
- Make decisions regarding access, permissions, and security controls across systems.
- Serve as the subject matter expert for general engineering issues and platform strategy.
- Mentor and coach engineers across the team, fostering technical excellence.
- Keep abreast of industry trends and evaluate platform needs for future growth.
