About The Position

The Dark Fiber Associate supports the planning, design, development, and execution of long-haul and metro existing dark fiber network costing projects. This role works closely with Sales Account teams, Fiber engineering, OSP, ISP, and operations teams to identify route opportunities, evaluate infrastructure assets, support feasibility studies, and assist in delivering scalable fiber infrastructure solutions. The ideal candidate possesses strong analytical skills, diligence, and an interest in telecommunications network development. This position provides exposure to all phases of dark fiber project execution, from route conception through construction and service activation.

Requirements

  • 1-3 years of experience in telecommunications, utilities, OSP construction, engineering, GIS, or infrastructure development preferred.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, GIS, and Teams.
  • Ability to analyze technical data and develop clear recommendations.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a challenging environment.
  • Experience with fiber optic network design for existing and new fiber deployments.
  • Familiarity with GIS platforms such as ArcGIS or Google Earth Pro.
  • Knowledge of OSP (Outside Plant) construction practices.
  • Understanding of railroad, DOT, utility, and permitting processes.
  • Experience with telecom route planning or network development.
  • Knowledge of fiber infrastructure and dark fiber business models.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing/ reviewing existing long-haul and metro dark fiber routes.
  • Perform route analysis using GIS mapping platforms and fiber inventory databases.
  • Identify viable rights-of-way, utility corridors, railroad crossings, bridge crossings, and utility attachment opportunities if required.
  • Support route optimization based on cost, constructability, and network resiliency.
  • Document route alternatives and associated risks.
  • Provide Costing components for all existing fiber requests.
  • Supports departmental and organizational objectives through additional responsibilities as assigned.
  • Assist in preparing fiber feasibility studies.
  • Research permitting requirements, easement constraints, and jurisdictional requirements.
  • Compile construction estimates and route metrics when needed for network gaps and overbuilds.
  • Analyze existing infrastructure that may be utilized for overbuilding or new construction opportunities.
  • Evaluate route risks and propose mitigation strategies.
  • Update network databases and asset records.
  • Track fiber counts, route mileage, splice locations, and network inventory.
  • Assist with as-built documentation reviews and uploads.
  • Ensure route records remain accurate and current.
  • Create and review route narrative summaries and packages.
  • Develop project dashboards and status reports.
  • Analyze project costs, schedule impacts, and risk factors when required.
  • Support business cases for existing fiber investments.
