Requirements

  • 5-8 years of experience in investment management
  • Desire to work in a values-oriented environment focused on maximizing returns for our investors
  • A record of outstanding academic achievement and evidence of broad intellectual interests
  • Highly proficient in Excel; other tools may include Bloomberg, Python, and PowerPoint
  • Distinctive problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills; able to interact on an equal footing with some of the world’s top hedge fund managers
  • Willingness to become a specialist focused on mastering the nuances of a single investment strategy and interest in owning responsibility for investment decisions
  • Decisiveness based on thorough research and the ability to speak with conviction about an investment (or divestment) idea
  • Strong work ethic and drive necessary to out-think the competition

Responsibilities

  • Support the CIO and a PM in managing a book of external hedge fund investments in the long-short equity space, adding alpha to MIO’s portfolios net of all assessed risks and capital charges.
  • Perform in-depth research to source new manager opportunities.
  • Prepare analyses and shortlists of potential managers and provide evidence-based hiring (or firing) recommendations.
  • Actively and comprehensively monitor managers, including regular discussions to understand their market insights, alignment with investors, and business objectives.
  • Keep a detailed record of corresponding documentation for existing and prospective managers.
  • Help manage the relationship with new and existing managers and negotiate fund investment terms.
  • Operate within MIO’s proprietary investment frameworks and processes.
  • Build out MIO’s manager assessment frameworks, improving the team’s forecasts of each manager’s alpha generation potential, grounding those forecasts in concrete evaluations of each manager’s investment capabilities.
  • Drive MIO’s efforts to maintain and build out new conceptual frameworks for assessing third-party equity long/short strategies.
  • Project manage the development of key frameworks and associated analytics to ensure accurate and timely completion, balancing competing priorities across multiple stakeholders.
  • Conduct quantitative research, including data collection, review, and cleansing; and backtesting and statistical studies.
  • Own the execution and implementation of the frameworks developed, working with MIO’s systems and data to institutionalize these frameworks into tangible reports and tools.
  • Oversee these reports and tools in the production environment on an ongoing basis, ensuring the accuracy of outputs, and raising insights that are used to help inform investment decisions—and further improve the frameworks.
  • Support the broader team by leading selected initiatives outside of their designated strategy areas.
