About The Position

Tocaro Blue is seeking an Associate Navigation and Autonomy Engineer to join their elite team of 5-7 engineers in Birmingham, Alabama. This role involves architecting and implementing software products for maritime autonomy, including multi-target tracking, sensor fusion (marine Radar and EO/IR cameras), localization in GPS-denied environments, and path-planning. The software supports Unmanned and Autonomous Surface Vehicles (USV and ASV) for the US Navy and major marine electronic manufacturers for recreational ADAS and autopilot applications. This is a unique opportunity to define the autonomy roadmap for the marine industry, evolving from perception systems to obstacle avoidance and full autonomous control.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree (MS) in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or related technical field
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience applying parameter and state estimation, dead-reckoning and localization, and sensor fusion to dynamic systems (graduate research counts if directly applicable)
  • Proven track record through Master's thesis, dissertation, or commercial projects demonstrating mastery of both localization and target tracking.
  • C++ development backed by Python and/or MATLAB prototyping.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with kinematics, statistics, and state estimators
  • Experience implementing fusion and tracking models in C++ or python prototypes
  • Portfolio of personal projects or research solving complex real-world problems through software innovation
  • Examples of previous work in automotive or marine systems, robotics, or other autonomous vehicle development
  • Passion for pushing the boundaries of what's achievable with sensor fusion in challenging environments
  • Design-of-experiment for perception and fusion system testing and evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Design multi-object tracking evaluation tools, and automatic tuning procedures, for maritime situational awareness
  • Contribute to real-time multi-sensor-multi-object fusion tracking algorithms
  • Create vessel motion models to enhance object tracking using parameter estimation
  • Design experiments to characterize the behavior of radars, cameras, and other perception sensors
  • Build test-fixtures and calibration scripts to determine intrinsic behavior of marine sensors
  • Assist with simulation of marine perception, tracking, and autonomy systems

Benefits

  • 401(k) with 4% company matching
  • Full health/dental/vision coverage
  • Life and disability insurance
  • Generous PTO
  • Training programs
  • Conference attendance
