Requirements

  • Must be a graduate of a Judge Accreditation School/ Program approved by The Ohio State Racing Commission
  • Must have served as a Racing Official for a minimum of 3 years or has engaged in racing as an, trainer, driver, for at least 5 years and has been an observer in the judges stand for no less than 30 days
  • Must have 20/20 vision or corrected 20/20 vision and ability to distinguish colors correctly
  • An extensive knowledge of the rules of racing; application of appropriate penalties, racing protocols, animal welfare and duty of care requirements; preparation of budgets; development of rules and policy recommendations; and effective skills in public speaking
  • Must have high standards of ethical conduct. Exhibits honesty and integrity
  • Must display a high level of initiative, effort and commitment towards completing assignments efficiently. Works with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrates responsible behavior and attention to detail
  • Works and communicates with others in a polite, courteous, and cooperative manner

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for fostering a fun environment
  • Responsible for being a gracious host to all guests and co-workers
  • Responsible for promoting a positive influence in the community and participating in company-sponsored events
  • Interprets/ enforces the Ohio State Racing Commission administrative rules
  • Makes Decisions to insure the integrity of Pari-mutuel racing/wagering
  • Along with the Presiding Judge has authority over all horses and all persons, licensed, on association grounds during a race meeting as to all matters related to racing
  • Along with the Presiding Judge reviews alleged racing violations; issues rulings after hearing testimony and may levy fines/suspensions and/or make recommendations to the Ohio State Racing Commission for further action
  • Advises track management. Law enforcement officers, licensees, owners, trainers and the general public on the Ohio Code and administrative rules and resolves regulatory disputes; notifies track management of potential compliance issues with proposed changes in internal procedures
  • Observes the running of live races and replays to ensure there was no interference during the running of the race. Along with the Presiding Judge may disqualify a horse and change the order of finish if warranted; ensures lock of each race and declares every race official
  • Monitors patterns of wagering for any irregularities.
