About The Position

New York-Presbyterian is seeking an Associate General Counsel to support its Office of Legal Affairs and Risk Management. This role will provide strategic legal guidance and support across the NewYork-Presbyterian enterprise, focusing on healthcare and contract law. The Associate General Counsel will work with hospital stakeholders on general healthcare issues, privacy and regulatory matters, and will review, draft, and negotiate a wide range of contracts. These contracts include those for general goods and services, consulting services, shared and managed services, physician employment agreements, business associate agreements, grants funding, collaboration agreements, data use agreements, clinical trials, material transfers, and research agreements. The position involves performing legal research, interpreting laws, and staying updated on current developments. The Associate General Counsel may also serve on hospital committees, participate in working groups, and advise departmental leaders on commercial, legal, privacy, and regulatory matters. Additionally, the role will support organizational initiatives, handle special projects, and perform other assigned duties. Experience as in-house counsel is strongly preferred but not required. The Associate General Counsel will join a high-intensity, full-service corporate legal department of over twenty attorneys and is expected to collaborate with colleagues and business partners to protect the organization's interests and support its strategic objectives.

Requirements

  • Law degree
  • Admission to the New York State Bar
  • Five years of previous work related experience
  • Knowledge of Risk Management
  • Knowledge of Healthcare Law

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of 8 years of significant legal work experience in transactional matters with a focus on healthcare and in reviewing, structuring, drafting and negotiating a variety of commercial contracts
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state healthcare and contract laws, including but not limited to HIPAA, Stark, the Anti-Kickback Statute and New York Public Health Law
  • Outstanding organizational skills and the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects with conflicting deadline pressures and competing priorities
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent client service, negotiations, problem solving and decision making skills are essential
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams but also independently to complete assigned work
  • Experience as an in-house counsel is strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic legal guidance and support across the NewYork-Presbyterian enterprise through expertise in healthcare and contract law.
  • Work closely with various hospital stakeholders to provide counsel on general healthcare issues, privacy and regulatory matters.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate a wide array of contracts, focusing on general goods and services, consulting services, shared and managed services, physician employment agreements, business associate agreements, grants funding, collaboration agreements, data use agreements, clinical trials, material transfers, and research agreements.
  • Perform research, including interpretation of laws, rulings, and regulations, and stay up-to-date with current developments in areas of responsibility.
  • Serve on hospital committees and participate in working groups as needed, providing practical legal guidance on regulatory, contracting, privacy, and operational matters.
  • Advise hospital departmental leaders on a range of commercial, legal, privacy, and regulatory matters.
  • Support organizational initiatives and handle special projects and other duties as assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with fellow counsel and business partners at all levels of hospital management to protect the organization’s interests and support its strategic objectives.
