About The Position

The Associate Engineer in Transmission System Planning assists in transmission system impact studies and the development of system solutions for the interconnection of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) within the Eversource electric system. This role provides support for the development and maintenance of power system study models and involves performing technical analysis under guidance. Typical reliability studies include analyses of power flow, stability, electromagnetic transient, and short circuit. The Transmission System Planning team is responsible for ensuring that Eversource’s future bulk power system reliably serves customers and meets applicable national and local state interconnection standards. The group forecasts 1 to 10 years into the future to identify necessary upgrades for the transmission and distribution system to comply with state regulatory requirements and national/regional standards. This role is designed for recent graduates with foundational knowledge in power systems and electrical engineering who are eager to gain hands-on experience in utility planning and reliability studies. The Associate Engineer supports the development and analysis of electric transmission system models and evaluates system performance under various operating conditions.

Requirements

  • Knowledge with power system transmission analysis tools such as PSSE, TARA, EMS, ASPEN, PSCAD, or other similar analysis software
  • Knowledge of programming language such as Python
  • Knowledge of new technologies including but not limited to photovoltaic solar, electric vehicles, and battery
  • Knowledge of electrical theory as applied to planning an electric power supply system
  • Knowledge of National, State and other planning standards and reliability criteria
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, focus in Power Systems.
  • 0-3 years related experience is required.
  • Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.
  • Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Internship experience is preferred.
  • Relevant experience in planning, design, and/or operations related to transmission lines, substation facilities, with knowledge of power system planning.

Responsibilities

  • Supports development and maintenance of the system models for transmission studies under guidance of more senior Engineers.
  • Collects and reviews forecast loads to be included in the model.
  • Collects, modifies, and reviews a variety of electric system parameters including: equipment ratings, impedances, contingency sets, protection and control parameters, as well as system topology.
  • Collects, modifies, and reviews DER modeling for steady state, stability, short circuit, and EMT analyses.
  • Assists with DER transmission system impact studies in the entire Eversource service territories.
  • Prepares study scopes based on determined study assumptions.
  • Verifies technical information and models of DER applications according to modeling testing processes, and provides timely comments to DER customers for model updates and corrections.
  • Applies corporate planning standards in conjunction with any other applicable NERC, NPCC, and ISO-NE reliability standards and criteria.
  • Supports solutions development to mitigate identified significant adverse impacts by testing solution alternatives as directed.
  • Provides support to more senior Engineers for interfacing with various ISO-NE staff, DER and Distribution System Planning, line and substation engineering, asset management, siting, environmental and permitting, operations, etc. for the determination of system impacts and proposed solutions.
  • Documents study results in study reports.
  • Assists more senior Engineers in providing study updates and presenting study results to regulatory agencies, DER customers, and affected parties.
  • Automates study processes for routines with transmission analysis tools.
  • Clearly and effectively communicates the results of analyses both verbally and in writing.
  • Assists with the development of training modules.
  • Performs an emergent storm assignment as needed during times of inclement weather or adverse system conditions.
  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.
  • Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
