About The Position

National Grid is hiring an Associate Engineer (Electrical Planning and Design), Electrical Engineering for Massachusetts. This is a Hybrid Role - Must live within a commutable distance to Northboro, MA. Electric Transmission Engineering designs projects that improve the reliability of the high-voltage electric system for our customers. Our team has a process-driven and self-directed culture, solving diverse technical challenges for large, complex, multi-year projects. We investigate new, innovative solutions for a wide variety of projects. We are proud of how we respond to emergency situations in-the-moment by supporting restoration efforts, and also develop standards and documentation for the next generation of engineers. Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering school.
  • Experience with transmission design software including: PLS CADD, PLS POLE, and/or MFAD.
  • Familiarity with engineering and design software such as AutoCAD
  • Familiarity with industry standards, safety standards, and current design codes, especially the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
  • Proficient Microsoft Office computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Excellent time management and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently
  • Knowledge of National Grid's business operations

  • Structural steel and wood pole design

  • Engineer in Training Certificate (EIT) is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Perform transmission line engineering and design work on various projects including new transmission lines, refurbishments, and reconductoring projects.
  • Conduct field inspections, determine cost-effective solutions, and develop comprehensive engineering reports based on applicable design codes, engineering procedures, and sound safety practices.
  • Conduct engineering studies, analysis, and investigations in order to recommend corrective action or to prevent future problems.
  • Specify, order, and coordinate material delivery. Review vendor calculations and fabrication drawings.
  • Support Environmental and other permitting efforts.
  • Prepare project specifications, and develop procedures and technical documents.
  • Collaborate with diverse project teams to deliver projects on time, within scope, and on budget.
  • Proactively build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders in order to obtain and share information that will benefit National Grid and our customers.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to less experienced engineers.
  • Investigate the adoption of new and innovative technologies.
