About The Position

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking an Electrical Engineer to join a global engineering team responsible for the design and continuous innovation of our rapidly expanding data center footprint. AWS Infrastructure Services is responsible for the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure, ensuring the cloud and ML/AI models run efficiently. The role involves working on challenging problems with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain, collaborating with a diverse team of engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, and operations managers. The goal is to deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing infinite capacity at the best possible cost. Engineers with hands-on electrical design experience are sought, capable of designing electrical systems, understanding critical data center equipment needs, and the constructability of designs. The team is structuring to own more engineering in-house, with engineers responsible for taking designs from concept to permit and construction documents, defining critical equipment specifications, approving submittals, and supporting construction from site selection through commissioning and turnover. Subject matter expertise in electrical engineering is expected. Amazon supports continued learning and employee development. Teamwork is essential, requiring collaboration with internal and external groups including utilities, manufacturers, vendors, and contractors. The position is based in Virginia, with required travel to the Seattle head office (up to 20%), primarily to Virginia-based data centers and for in-person collaboration. International support and some international travel may be necessary for working on international teams and developing design packages, though understanding international electrical design requirements is helpful but not essential.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including but not limited to: data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Experience in industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including but not limited to: data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities
  • Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer License
  • Experience with building codes and regulations for your region
  • Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment or mass production
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents
  • Experience in commissioning

Responsibilities

  • Data center electrical designs and collaboration with other disciplines to create a construction document set.
  • Creation of designs which meet or exceed our quality requirements and fall within our budgetary requirements.
  • Work with local agencies having jurisdiction to ensure compliance with federal, state and municipal requirements and building codes.
  • Review and approval of equipment submittals.
  • Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests prior to, and during construction phases.
  • Work with commissioning teams to properly test and validate installation, operation, and performance of electrical systems.
  • Ability to work on concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.
  • Travel to sites for site review and work with onsite field engineers, as well as provide engineering evaluations, electrical systems audits, and startup as needed.
