About The Position

As an Associate Editor, Hagerty Media, you’re a utility infielder. This is not a job for someone who wants to specialize. We need someone who can write a sharp story, organize a photo shoot, drive a collector car to a location, run down a lead, fact-check a feature, and pitch three good ideas in the same week. Sometimes in the same day. The role sits within Hagerty’s editorial operation — serving the magazine, digital platforms, video, and whatever else we dream up next. The work is varied by design, and that variety is the point. One week you might be researching the history of a forgotten muscle car. The next you might be on a plane to cover an auction, coordinate a desert photo shoot, or track down the one person in the world who knows the most about a 1967 Camaro Z/28. If doing a bunch of genuinely different things sounds like a burden, this is not your job. If it sounds like the job you’ve always wanted, keep reading.

Requirements

  • Genuine car enthusiasm — not a passing interest, a real obsession.
  • Strong writing skills across multiple formats, including features, web, social, and captions.
  • Good ideas and the confidence to pitch them.
  • Organizational ability — you can manage logistics without being reminded.
  • Self-starter mentality — you figure things out rather than waiting to be told.
  • Curiosity that extends beyond cars — history, culture, people, business.
  • Comfort working across platforms and formats.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly.
  • Valid driver’s license and comfort driving a wide range of vehicles, including high-value collector cars.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in journalism, photography, research, editorial assistance, or a related media role.
  • Hands-on experience working in or around the automotive industry, collector car world, or enthusiast media.
  • Familiarity with how editorial operations actually function — from pitch to publication.
  • Exceptional talent and demonstrated versatility across editorial formats will be considered in lieu of traditional experience.

Responsibilities

  • Writing: everything from photo captions to small Web features to new- and old-car reviews. And more.
  • Project management: magazine stories and sections require “trail-bossing,” a complex set of logistical and creative skills.
  • Ideation: Be ready to pitch ideas on multiple fronts.
  • Locate and recruit privately owned cars for magazine stories and photo shoots.
  • Conduct photo and informational research.
  • Collaboration: This is essential to what we do. Media products are the result of brainstorming, strategizing, debate, and decision-making. You’ll hone your skills on all these fronts.
  • Database management: stories, photos, and other media assets have to be rigorously curated and categorized.
  • Magazine section management: curate, organize, ideate, and execute specific sections of the print magazine, under the tutelage of senior editorial staff, collaborating closely with contributing writers, photographers, illustrators, and other members of Hagerty media and Valuation staff.
