About The Position

The Chartered Professional Accountants of British Columbia (CPABC) is seeking a detail-oriented, collaborative, and results-driven individual for the position of Associate Director, Professional Conduct. This role is integral to the effective regulation of the professional conduct of members, students, and firms. The position is responsible for supporting the delivery of processes and programs to resolve complaints and conducting investigations into professional conduct complaints. The Associate Director will directly contribute to CPABC’s primary mission to protect the public by ensuring that professional standards are being met, while also balancing the requirement to maintain fair processes.

Requirements

  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation
  • Three (3) plus years of Public Practice experience within a CPA firm
  • Three (3) plus years of Investigation experience, ideally in a professional regulatory environment
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively, build credibility and strong relationships with a broad range of stakeholders at all levels in the organization
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a focus on diplomacy, patience, and clarity of meaning
  • Strong decision making and professional judgment skills
  • Highly professional, diplomatic and tactful
  • High degree of integrity and professionalism when handling confidential files and information
  • Demonstrated ability to build trusted and collaborative working relationships with business and cross functional teams
  • Adept problem resolution skills and the ability to effectively manage conflict-based communications
  • Strong ability to think strategically and analyze risks and potential downstream consequences of actions
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, reprioritize tasks, and meet deadlines under pressure
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a key team member, and independently with minimal supervision

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) or other investigation-related credentials would be an asset

Responsibilities

  • Conduct increasingly complex investigations into professional conduct complaints received by CPABC, in compliance with the CPA Act, Bylaws, Bylaw Regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Produce investigation reports and case presentations for Committee review, to conclude investigations conducted.
  • Prepare draft Determination & Recommendations, as required, following Committee meetings.
  • Provide evidence as a witness at discipline hearings, as required.
  • Assist with developing and delivering process and system improvements.
  • Supporting the development and delivery of processes and programs in the professional conduct regulatory area.
  • Supporting appropriate planning, evaluation and reporting in the key regulatory area.
  • Supporting the application and maintenance of policies and procedures related to the areas of responsibility of this position.
  • Maintaining practices that meet or exceed international and national standards.
  • Assisting in maintaining appropriate governing documentation to enable effective regulation of the key regulatory area.
  • Supporting continuous improvement of CPABC professional conduct processes and systems.
  • Ensuring departmental compliance with records management policies.
  • Maintaining an awareness of and respect for the priorities of other CPABC Departments and help ensure that other Departments are aware of the priorities for the key regulatory area.
  • Providing appropriate, effective and timely documentation to support decision making.
  • Drafting and producing content for department website, as required.
  • Take ownership of future projects and responsibilities such as: Investigator training, ensuring compliance with our document management system; Records management, retention and destruction.
  • And other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time.
